Crossbreeds that make you go 😱

A Frenchie Chow - French bulldog x Chow Chow. I saw one the other day quite cute but not 2 breeds I would put together

It worries me that people are randomly crossing anything, with no regard to what they are creating.

Aside from physical characteristics, we've selectively bred dogs over thousands of years to do particular jobs. Crossing dogs with very different breed traits could result in a litter of conflicted, even neurotic pups.

I also get so cross when I see some of these x breeds as that is what they are. But people will pay a fortune for them, and just bred because they look cute. Not thinking what problems they can have when giving birth or later in life. When I think of a pomski they look cute but really a pom and husky 🤦‍♀️

Well, if you cross a Jack Russell Terrier with a Shih Tzu, you end up with Jack Shih-T. 😏

I have heard of people crossing Border Collies with Jack Russell Terriers to come up the ultimate flyball dogs - the Border Jack. Sounds like a nightmare on crack, to me...
I had one, and have known a few others. Mine wasn't bred on purpose - she was a farm accident. Farms that keep a collie for the sheep and a terrier for the vermin can easily slip up and produce a litter. I got her as a rescue at around 18 months, my first dog. She had the brains of the collie and tenacity of the terrier. When her ball went into a bramble thicket she'd not give up until she'd got it. Her only real fault was her obsession with team ball games, she'd run off to join in. On her last walk at the age of nearly 16, I had to fight to keep her from dragging me off to join in a game of rugby that she could only hear, not see, as she was blind by then.
She was such a sweet-natured dog, and very trainable.

Well, my Felix certainly wasn't purposely bred, but the mix that came back from his Wisdom DNA panel could potentially explain why he could, at times, be described best as 'conflicted & even neurotic' (🤣 It's OK, we still love him... sometimes!) 28% Plott Hound, 21% Chihuahua then 17 other bits & pieces of breeds to make up the other half. We refer to him as our Plottihuahua.

Looks like there's a good bit of Jack Russell in there.

You'd think, right? But nope (at least not according to Wisdom, which I still strongly suspect is truly 'for entertainment purposes only') He does supposedly have 7 % Rat Terrier as well as some bits & pieces of other terriers in the mix.
Here are his 'highlights' and supposed top 5:

Top 5 Breeds

  • 28% Plott Hound
  • 21% Chihuahua
  • 7% Rat Terrier
  • 4% Segugio Italiano
  • 4% Bluetick Coonhound

Borador.......a Border Collie x Labrador................I just happen to own one.

However she was not the result of an intentional cross; but a random crossing of 2 ranch dogs.

What is it about dogs and dirt? 🤣

We refer to that as a 'project face', since it's indicative of a dog who has been working busily on a fun project...

Max was as the name suggested the MAX he was a cross Bouvier des Flanders /St Bernard he looked like a Bouvier but had the height and weight of a small St Bernard at his peak he weighed 70kg ..
A lovely dog but scared of anything with wheels due to puppy trauma when he witnessed the death of his brother. We had a wheelie bin with square wheels and he once ran off at night I heard a scream and he came back with the rear mudguard of a bike..!

Other than wheels he was everyones friend and convinced he was a lapdog!

The wolf dog hybrids that sometimes show up in the US really disturb me. The mix can turn out very badly, more dangerous than either a pure wolf or a pure dog. A pure wolf has a certain level of reserve around humans. They are very selective in who they choose to hang out with. Crossing them with dogs sometimes makes them more outgoing without necessarily giving them the social readiness to live with humans. Added to that, the owners tend to be people who don't think through the risks of keeping a very large, very volatile pet. There will always be someone on social media who says "my wolf-dog was the sweetest thing ever." Either they got very very lucky that the genetics worked out, or they got conned and actually had a Malamute x German Shepherd cross.

Some of the sports and working dog combinations seem weird at first glance: the various hound/setter/nordic breeds that go into sled dogs, the terrier/collie/papillon crosses that go into agility and flydog competition. I've always thought the lurcher was an odd combination; they are uncommon where I live. People seem to keep repeating the crosses, though, so I guess the breeders are satisfied with the results.

The way people keep crossing poodles with just about everything makes me roll my eyes in a big way. It's like they want their dog to have a sprinkling of fairy dust, but an actual poodle is just too sissy. (Glancing over at my sissy poodle who didn't even yelp when he ripped his dew claw off.)
