here in the USA, we still kill between 3 & 5 million ‘surplus’ AKA homeless dogs & cats, each year. :( Try to imagine how many animals that is, on any average day.
It’s 8K, 219 daily on the low end, at 3M —- or if 5M died in the year, & the deaths were distributed evenly, 13,698 in a day...

@JudyN ,
I am talking about the consequences for shelters, rescues, & pets when unintended or poorly planned litters are born. This is relevent to prior posts that expressed opinions condemning S/N prior to “maturity”, however the individual poster might define that.
The high...

To squelch any potential conflict, I started a new thread. :)
This post - which included the stats on U-S euthanasia, nationally,
& the contrast between Southeast U-S [loads of litters, floods of homeless pets overwhelming shelters] vs New England [very few unplanned litters, few homeless...

Where did i say, or even imply, that mating a 6-MO bitch is a good idea? - or that breeding a 6-MO dog is a good idea? o_O I stated simply that, biologically, they are both capable of reproduction, which equates to adult status in any organism.
As for 11-YO girls having menses / being...

I don’t know why anyone would think a 6-MO pup is “such a baby” -
at 6-MO, She can get pregnant & carry a litter to term anytime now, depending upon the vagaries of her own hormones & any exposure to airborne estrous pheromones from other Fs,
& at 6-MO, He is fully loaded with...

I have zero issues with a pubertal spay [6-MO] & in fact, i recommend it to my puppy-owning clients - so well done, IMO, as she is now virtually immune to any mammary tumors, plus her risk of Pyometra is gone, & her odds of UTIs are much reduced. :)
As she never had an estrus, her risk of...

I’m going to vote for Wagnificent! - dog-walking & in-home boarding.

As long as U have an explanatory tag-line, a catchy name is easily recalled, distinctive, & fun.
Let’s face it, “Charley’s Dog Wash” is a lot less memorable than “Bubbles & Squeak dog-grooming”. :D

About retraining for a reliable rapid-recall [on a long line & Y-harness, not loose] -
One of the best tactics I know requires a helper: someone known to the dog, willing & able to hold onto the HARNESS rather than the long-line, in order to restrain him as U run off.
The idea is that as...

Hi, @Free spirit -
Sorry to say, I cannot agree that simply hanging out with another dog-owner, no matter how “calm & sensible” she or he may be, will painlessly & effortlessly cause problem behaviors to evaporate.
The owner or handler can be as calm & self-confident as an iceberg...

This is, by far, my fave video of How To Introduce a Box Muzzle HAPPILY:
.
Notice that this F ACD is, as typical of her breed, not a fan of strangers - however, the trainer in this clip has excellent timing [with her marker, in this case, the “click!” of the box-clicker, held in her...

I am sorry to hear U are struggling, not only with a dog whose lifetime habits aren’t apropos in his new setting, but with other people who are exceedingly judgmental about his behavior, & apparently oblivious to their own responsibilities! -
Keeping my own dog from approaching or harassing a...

Such a good dog, Murphy!... :)
I am glad to hear that tho U are colorful & ouchy, no serious damage resulted! -
those surprise falls are terrifying;
in Dec-2009, i was returning from a brief shopping trip less than a block from home, walking on grass on a slight slope, & suddenly found...

Had my 1st customer for the beefheart jerky - a tiny Yorkie x Maltese. :D
He belongs to the nice mechanic who came by to fetch Rozinante (our faithful ramp-equipped van) to his shop for repair. Very sweet dog, a bit shy but warmed to us fairly quickly.
I would say he gave it 5 stars, LOL -...

The ‘safest’ form of rawhide is minced & shaped - cut into tiny bits, then while still damp & malleable, the small pieces are put into a mold, compressed, & baked dry.
However - rawhide is not a suitable “reward” for in the moment training, as it takes too doggoned long to safely gnaw back...

We are in the Lakeland area, Tampa Bay is over an hour away by car -
but there are plenty of local resources, a large mall w/in 20-mins drive if we want to stroll & shop or go to a different restaurant, & so on.
Organic foods are a bit of a challenge, staples such as org milk are at Publix...
