Rescue dog still does not show affection after nearly 3 years

A really interesting read. It is definitely Lulu and her behaviour now makes sense. I am told she was born in the PTS pound but her DNA will be ‘street dog’. However my other rescue dog Bonnie, found on the mountains of Turkey is affectionate and completely laid back which shows how dogs from...

Rescue dog still does not show affection after nearly 3 years

I agree, and as far as Lulu is concerned by affection I probably meant acknowledgment. She doesn’t greet me in any way when she sees me and still runs past me if she passes me. (Related to her past I guess) I wouldn’t dream of forcing myself on her, and if I sit on the floor long enough she will...

Rescue dog still does not show affection after nearly 3 years

Many thanks for your kind words, I really appreciate it. I have used a brilliant Face Book advice forum which is run by dog psychologists, behaviour experts and vets. I have learnt a lot about dogs through Lulu which I wish I’d known years ago when I first started adopting dogs. I do think she...

Rescue dog still does not show affection after nearly 3 years

Hi Tiny Tom, Yes we got another rescue for that reason 2 years ago. They are fine with one another but don’t interact at all. Bonnie loves our company and wants to be with us all the time. Unfortunately it hasn’t made any difference to Lulu.

Rescue dog still does not show affection after nearly 3 years

Hello Joanne, I do know Lulu’s background in that she was in a PTS pound. I know many dogs abroad have stones thrown at them etc and are therefore naturally frightened of people. She is frightened of men. I do avoid what I know frightens her because of fear stacking. Luckily we live in a quiet...

Rescue dog still does not show affection after nearly 3 years

Hi Judy, thank you for replying. Lulu has no interest in toys eg ball throwing. She doesn’t show affection outside. She’ll wag her tail if she sees someone or a dog she recognises on her walk but doesn’t interact. She is used to the environmental sounds in the house unless one she’s not heard...

Rescue dog still does not show affection after nearly 3 years

Hello, Lulu came to us as a 2 yr old rescue dog from Cyprus. She had totally shut down. She stays in her bed in my bedroom all day. She only comes out to go out for walks. I still have to feed her there. She loves her walks and is out going engaging with other dogs, her recall is acceptable...

Thank you so much for your help and advice; which I have read carefully and digested. I think the main point from you all is : be patient!

How long for a timid rescue dog to show their personality?

That’s really helpful, thank you. All my other dogs have been very affectionate, craving the love they’d never had. With this one it’s not really like having a dog at all. Do you think we’re talking weeks or months to show any character?

How long for a timid rescue dog to show their personality?

I have had my rescue dog for 3 months now. She is 2 years old. She is confident with other dogs and on walks. She continues to be fairly timid in the house and garden. She doesn’t appear to have any personality at all. In the house she eats and sleeps and nothing else. Doesn’t come for affection...

Dog won’t come inside when called.

I’ve had my rescue dog for 6 wks now. After a lot of hard work she’ll now come into the house when I leave the door open but likes to trot in and out. However she won’t come into the house when I call her from the door but does come to me in the garden. Now the weather has changed I can’t leave...

Will lock down have suited my new rescue dog?

I got my very anxious stressed rescue dog just before lock down. Since then she has come out of her shell a little and is beginning to trust me. But no one else has come into the house. So will lock down have been good for her just getting used to me or bad for her because she’s not used to...

Rescue dog doesn’t like coming in the house.

My rescue dog from a pound in Cyprus has no experience of living in a house. She loves the garden and spends all her time there. How can I get her used to being in the house when she refuses to come into the house and runs straight out again if I carry her in.? Thank you.

    Struggling with a rescue dog

Thank you for your help. Another question; at the moment I have 2 beds for Lottie. 1 in the lounge, and 1 in a laundry room for her at night. As she won’t go through door ways we have to carry her to her bed at night. Are we right for her to have a day and night bed or is this confusing for her?
