we recently got a 20 month old whippet bitch, she settled into our family straight away but now my wife feels as if the new dog (nancy) doesnt like her as she never comes to her and seems to avoid her , why is this? any advice would be good as it was my wife who wanted to get her, just one thing she has come into season, will that have anything to do with it?

Hallo and welcome to K9 :)

My advice would be to hang in there!!! It's early days yet and whippets can seem a little aloof at times :-

It could well be to do with Nancy having PMT ....... my girls change their characters before coming into season and it is very noticeable. You haven't had Nancy long so you won't know her normal traits and character which makes it difficult for you to tell.

There are times when I think my girls are ignoring me and favouring my husband, lol, they definitely go through "phases" so I think it is a normal thing. I always find that the way to a whippet's heart is lovely walks together and one to one at feeding time, together with copious amounts of stroking and crooning noises :D :D :D

Give it time and be patient, Nancy will become the best friend your wife has ever had in time to come

I agree with jane...hang on in there.....my Gypsy can be a right snotty old bag at times...she will walk right past me and ignore me.........alot of the time she will follow robert around the house and its him she greets first if we have been out ;)

but at other times she wont leave me alone ;)

as jane said...get your wife to feed, walk and brush her.................a few little treats and she will soon be her best friend :)

would love to see some piccies :D

It may be that your whippet was more used to men before you got her .

Your wife should be the one to feed her and give out the treats .

As others have said nice long walks and don't worry she will come round in time ;)

I was going to say the same.

Not knowing, personally, the circumstances of your dog before, it may be that the female of house(if there was one) may of been nasty to her??

Our dogs are not used to men so would possibly react in the same way

Thanks for the feed back folks, i only asked as i have never had a bitch before only dogs our last whippet had to be put lo sleep this year after a health 15 years so its not that iam new to whippets just to the whole in season bitch thing, Nancy seems to have been well treated but maybe shes not been treated as a house dog, she has been shown as a younger dog,
