Hey there, I was just wondering if someone could give me some advice, my girl is 7 weeks pregnant and since she started her pregnancy she hasnt eaten the same.

The vet told me that she is under weight for 7 weeks gone, and I'm concernd that she has yet to produce milk.

I have started to massage her nipples with moisturiser and i'm feeding her turkey breasts cooked and chopped into bight size pieces.

I have to hand feed her everything! lol

I also got some of the lactateing bitch milk to give her to try and fatten her up, but i'm worried that she isnt producing milk yet.

Any advice on how i could help her along or how to get her to eat a bit better?

My girl had puppies at the beginning of March, she was the same through her pregnancy was really fussy eating. We gave her what she wanted and had to hand feed her every meal, she had 3 tins of puppy food a day, nearly a whole chicken a day, the only complete she nibbled on was tesco complete, I tried allsorts of the puppy complete but she wouldn't touch any of it, she also was on 4 meals a day :thumbsup:

Once the pups were born they were vet checked the same day and we were told Bren had very little milk so was given the oxcytocin injection to bring her milk on, but we were told to give her either lactol or whelpi and she was on about 2 1/2 pints of this a day we also supplemented the pups (vets advice) for the first 48 hours :thumbsup: For the first 3-4 weeks Bren carried on eating whatever she wanted and we gave her the lactol until we started to wean the puppies. The pups thrived and were really healthy weights. Hope this helps a little :thumbsup:

You also have to be very careful not to overfeed them as well :thumbsup: But I guess you are having the opposite problem to that anyway

I got to admit I did worry about overfeeding but luckily Bren even though ate a fair amount stopped when she had had enough

Thanks for that, I'm just worried because we were trying to get her to eat 3 tins a day, but she wont. So we went shopping and most of the food was for her! she has sausages turkey some cheese as a tempter, and the whelping milk powder which we had to add honey to because she wouldnt drink it! my god i have a fussy little madame!

She weighs 14.03 kg and she used to weigh 10.07 kg i believe. the vet said this was insufficiant weight gain for 7 weeks, but she seems to be huge to me! and she goes right across not upp in the tummy, she looks like she just has a rib cage and no belly lol!

I still worry that she has no milk but her nipples are getting bigger. If she doesnt produce milk then we are prepaired to hand feed all the pups! a lot of sleepless nights ahead i think lol!

My bitch didn't show any milk until her pups were born, she has masses for all 6 and is doing a brilliant job. She is also a picky eater but has decided she will eat tripe. Try giving her cooked chicken, tripe, really whatever she will eat. Good luck with the whelping, mine are now 4 weeks old and fat little porkers!

Tegan stopped eating well 2 weeks before her pups were born and for the first week after they were born .With her having 9 pups we particially bottle fed them and Tegan had lactol as well. She had sat waiting for the pups to finish thei bottles as she knew she would get what they left.

She showed milk 2 weeks before the pups were born but when she had her first litter she had no milk until she went into whelp I asked the vet about this and she said she would drop milk when the pups suckled

I think she looks OK too. My Dangermouse was small to start with 15lb, so didn't have much room for food once the pups started growing. I had to tempt her to eat too. She had 5 healthy puppies, but looked like skin and bone herself. Once they were born, she ate like a horse (w00t) and within a week, she looked well covered again. I think it's the lack of room because the stomach is squashed that stops them from eating. I gave her goats milk and honey, and she really enjoyed that. she doent look smaile I have put a pick of lacey up on the whelping box thread lacey was 27lb( 12.2kg before mating by 5 weeks she was 32lb( 14.5) but she seams on the same lines as yours do you go to a normal vet or a greyhound vet. shes not been weighned since as i think if her pin bones are well coverd shes got enghe weight on her. all you can do is little and often and if she need the food she will eat.

Thats what we said with Tegan, June that she was that big she didn't have much room for food. When she had 9 pups all weighing between 9 oz and 12 oz we decided that we were probably right

Well she looks fine to me,she got another two weeks yet,so theres still a possibilty she might get more bigger,but not alot.It depend on how many she has got in there,there could be only two or three,there again she could have six or more.

Were taking her back to the vet on thursday next week, and getting a scan of the pups again, the vet is just a general practitioner, i think perhaps he is baseing his judgement on a "normal" built dog rather than a whippet.

If its allright I would like to print a copy of lacey to show the vet that she is roughly the same size, this may help him to see that pip isnt too small.

we had a breakthrough thismorning, we have milk just starting to come through in three of her nipples, so im going to carry on with rubbing them to try to stimulate the rest.

Never had a whippet litter but have had other breeds. My Jack russell for example hardly ate a thing as her pregnancy developed. I was convinced she wasnt eating enough to keep herself alive let alone "grow" pups. She gave birth to 3 big chunky babies a week early on both occasions. After they were born she didnt eat much for the first week but drank gallons of Welpi. She had a fantastic figure after she delivered and kept it right through rearing them.

Milk can come in as late as the pups being born so dont worry to much about it. Some times you dont think they have enough to feed all the pups but they do. :thumbsup:

I'll see if I can dig up a link for when my bitch had her first litter, she was weighed most weeks during pregnancy. Converting it to pounds it seems your bitch has put on about 8-9 pounds in her first 7 weeks of pregnancy. Kerri started off at 22lb following mating and was around 28lb at 7 weeks if I remember correctly, by the time she dropped at 9 weeks she was just shy of 32lb. Total weight gain just short of 5kg (10lb-ish). She produced 5 strong healthy pups weighing 8oz, 2x10oz (bitches) and 11oz and 12oz (dogs)

She did not milk until the pups began to suckle either on her first litter and her teats did not really come on in size until around 8 weeks when her body was preparing for "the drop".

Well the first scan at 4 weeks the vet said there were at least 4, but we did a crystal test and it said three lines and three circles! :teehee:

We will see if the crystal is right lol.
