Calling all you experienced whippet owners!!!!!. We are the proud owners of Mollie a pretty 17 week old whippet puppy. We thought she would be a gentle companion to our elderly cross-breed dog Ben. She is delightful and has now learned to have the greatest of respect for him- in other words let sleeping dogs lie (w00t) !!!!.

We also have Harry, who is a 2 year old siamese house cat. Harry is now convinced more than ever that he is a dog. Now onto the problem .... Harry and Mollie are bessotted by eachother.. totally!!! They sleep together entwined AHHHH!!

BUT... they they also play together very roughly . Mollie grabs him by the neck and pins him down , similarly he jumps on her back and bites her, they generally rough and tumble . At times i have to seperate them into different rooms in order to get some peace from having a whippet or cat flying past my ear . My dilemma is should I discourage their play? I realise that if Mollie were to encounter a more " cat like " cat , she would get a very different response from it . By allowing them to play as they do , am I encouraging Mollies chase instinct ?

All advice would be welcome.... Thanks in anticipation :clown:

Isnt this a great site ........... i love it ......... whippet heaven !!!!!!!!!!

hello and welcome to k9...........im sorry no advice from me, i dont have cats and my gypsy hates them :b

but i know many people on here do, so im sure they can give you some advice

p.s.........we love seeing pic's on here :- "

I have three cats here and 2 of them will lie with the dogs but the other one Mitch prefers not too.. and they do still play rough and tumble with each other but if things get too rough they get told off.

I wouldnt ever discourage them from being friends with my own cats but they still would chase a stranger ct outside Im sure of it.....but I just discourage them and say NO...

luckily we have never come across a cat on the loose on our walks, but Im sure cats usually take care of themselves...

Hi Miss Mollies Mummy

Welcome to K9. A few weeks ago, someone posted a link to a UTube clip of a siamese cat and a whippet playing. They did look really rough at times, but absolutely loved each other. There was a sad end to the story because the cat died in an accident, but it was lovely to see the relationship these two had with each other. They would sit and wash each other, and it was just lovely.

I don't think you should discourage your two's playing - enjoy it - sounds like they do

If someone can remember the clip, can you post a link again - it was brilliant

My last siamese cat and dog had a relationship like that - they constantly chased and played and slept curled up together every night  When my Gelert was a puppy, his breeder had a kitten, and he and his litter sister had grown up playing with her in just this fashion. Unfortunately my current siamese was a bit too set in her ways to play with him when he arrived, as she was rather middle-aged before he arrived, and initial attempts to engage her in play were met with a few loud hisses and firm pats on the nose, and he soon modified his behaviour to grovelling respect (and at nearly 13 she's still top 'dog' in the household :sweating: ).

The chasing they are doing is part of normal play, socialising and bonding. Of course monitor it, and stop it if it's getting too rough, but I don't think it's the same thing that motivates chasing of other prey animals. Gelert is a great hunter, but still approaches all other cats as he would our own, very submissively. The important thing is to monitor things closely, as you can never be quite sure how they will react to cats or other domestic animals they don't know, make sure they are on lead/under control in these circumstances, and be very clear that chasing cats that aren't part of the family (even in play) isn't allowed with a firm 'No'. I'm sure she will be fine

Was it this one?

That's the one! - I tried searching the board for it this morning - it was under a post called something like "the cutest video ever" or something like that. I loved it, and just watched it again - such a lovely friendship, and the kitten must have been so gentle with its claws. Loved the bit where the kitten was suckling Fly's mouth :huggles:

It's great, but it does look a little rough in places but they wouldn't have kept on if they

hadn't enjoyed it...........shame about the kitten though....
