If you are a runner who enjoys taking your dog/s with you, running them beside you off lead, please remember that the off lead dogs of the walkers you find yourself running towards may see your approaching dog, and even perhaps you, as a possible threat (as my dachshund does) or (as is the case with my whippets) a wonderful opportunity to play with new friends. When you see me or someone like me call their dogs back as you approach please have the courtesy to stop and do the same, or at least slow down. And if you don't slow down, thus giving walkers like me enough time to leash their dogs (one of whom in my case will now be running away) don't then complain if the walker's dogs (as my whippets will given half a chance) decide to join your dog for a game of chase ... remember your dog approached them at a run. And to those so inclined might I also suggest that hurling verbal abuse at said walker and his or her dogs while you continue to run past them is no way to rectify the situation

I think this is becoming more of a problem as more and more people are starting to run with their dogs. Thankfully it has not happened to me but I have heard of similar situations happening to a few of the dog walkers in our area.

I understand your irritation Annie. I've had a couple of instances where a jogger with a dog in tow (usually a border collie) has come running towards me on my evening strolls down our road, and we've spotted them with very little warning when they been almost upon us. It doesn't half set my two off and the jogger then looks annoyed at having their run interrupted. It doesn't take much too work out that it can be quite intimidating for dogs on a lead having a dog run towards them out of the blue, especially in the darker evenings.

Yep same problem here too....Oscar (the nutty one of my three mind :clown: ) always follows the jogger and barks

he hates anything dangling or flapping ....god knows why. but he dosnt...

I usually pass the cross country runners at this time of year from our local school..including my son amongst them...and he is slowly

getting used to it......but a single jogger/runner freaks him out.

Quite agree, people are so inconsiderate and have no thought for other walkers and their dogs.

I had a problem the other day with someone out cycling with a very large bouncy dalmatian running loose beside him, the dog decided to come and 'play' with mine (who I'd put on lead when I saw the cyclist coming) and completely terrified timid little Sophie, which then set Taz and Benji off being protective of her and I had a real struggle to keep the lid on things, the blummin' dallie just wouldn't leave us alone. The cyclist, of course, carried on without a backward glance :(

It really isn't rocket science to stop your dogs bothering others, just simple good manners and a bit of consideration

Where we walk in our park there is one bit along the river where it's a single track path but often we will get joggers who come past us from behind with no warning at all and then get cross when ours try to chase their dogs as they are heading away from us.

Usually their dogs are smarter than them and will choose to do a diversion through the undergrowth rather than run past all our dogs from behind. Then the owner will stand there yelling for their dog to come to them, into the middle of our pack of dogs, which the dog usually doesn't want to do....smart dog.

My Scrumpy doesn't like brindle staffy types (as she was repeatedly bullied by one) so will pounce first now. Also she has a thing about very small white jack russels  (no reason for this other than being small & fast moving) so if I see one approaching I will get hold of her but if one is jogged past us from behind I've no chance & she'll strike at it as it goes by. Not good  But the owners always seem to think it's her fault and don't realise they shouldn't run past without warning.

makes me very cross
