I was thinking about the post about keeping dogs fit in winter, I free run mine in the woods so the ground is semi soft then with racing on grass also soft, if I started road walking them for a distance would it make their pads sore with the hardness of the ground, their garden play area is flagged so would that have hardened their pads a bit.?

I thought if I can't get to the woods because of the bad weather I could walk to school with them but it's quite a way and I don't want to make their pads sore what do you think? should I do small road walks to toughen their pads or will they be tough enough already.

:)

Hi there Lesley

I walk all mine every day on tarmac surffaces and also grass woods and sand on the beach if you have very young pups its wise to go steady at first on hard ground but others should be ok---watch out for glass though thats the trouble where we live also i dont think cinder tracks are good either tends to get in pads -- hope this helps

nice to hear of someone actually walking kids to school instead of driving sure they would like it also --

steve

I do a mixture, including the walk to school on pavements, and I've never had a problem with sore pads  If you're worried, maybe build them up slowly, say taking them on the school walk every other day to give their pads time to build-up in between :)

Hi Lesley,

if you fine their pads start to dry out just put a little cream on such as Padsonal (yellow or white) that will keep them soft and supple.

As Steve has said just be very careful of GLASS when we where street walking ours they where forever at the vets with the one tiny sliver that you couldnt get out then it was no walking for a week only to go out the week after and have the same thing happen again, be especially careful as with the ground being covered in leaves its so easy to miss big chunks underneath. We go round an industrial estate with ours now you dont seem to get wagon drivers smashing glass everywhere.

We have used padsonal for years on all our dogs , whippets and lurchers. it`s great for any soreness or splits on their pads. You can get it from any of the greyhound stores that advertise , we usually get it from the Greyhound and Whippet store in London by mailorder

Mine always get pavement walked at night in the winter (too dark when I get in to take em to open space) and they are fine.

yep ours too .... weve never had any trouble with pads - but there is always a first time.

When mine are racing and showing they get 5 miles a day on roads and have no problems (my feet on the other hand  ..... )

As the fields down by the river flood this time of year I end up road walking in winter too and walk my dogs for miles. I've not had any problems with sore pads and their nails get worn down too.

Hi Lesley, They should be fine especially as they have a paved area outside so the pads are used to walking on a hard surface ;)

Road work is great for building up muscle and as Beejay says you also get their nails done at the same time  and anything that saves me doing a job has just gotta be good in my books (w00t)

Thanks for the advice everyone, :D I think i will start adding some road walking in with the normal routine then when the weather gets too bad I can just road walk, I think my girls would be upset if they didn't get their regular manicure though :*

WATCH OUT FOR CORNS some racing dogs cannot be road walked like my squizzle .no problem on grass with her . my three other dogs are ok on tarmac

You can get it from Greyhound megastore, or if you have a big pets at home or pet centre they might stock it.

Do you mean racing bred dogs or just dogs that race squizzle?, mine are show bred and coursing bred do think it would make a difference?

Thanks Nigel it's handy to have

I have increased Evie's afternoon walk to 4 miles (just over an hour) this is pavement and road walking and her pads are fine Lesley

If you are unsure about your girls i would build up gradually or just see how they go on.

I think thats what will do Julie, I was just thinking about it and thinking that a dogs pads much be like our feet if we had to walk bare foot it would kill our feet, but if we did it all the time they would be tough as leather
