went lamping again last night this time my mate tagged along and bramble also joined me and fly.i decided to have a little scan over a hedge on a field i saw a few rabbits the other night ,once again there was 4 or 5 rabbits with one making its way accross the field towards some crop they keep for the pheasants so bramble was put through the hedge and she quickly sighted it ,a nice little course followed and bramble put the first rabbit the bag.the next rabbit i ran both dogs but this one made it to safety.my mate shot a hare and accidently let go of bramble who tried to retrieve it ,it ran over a brow but it had other ideas and came back over towards us ,i quickly slipped fly to help out and fly took over the course ,100 or so yrds this one got before fly bagged her first ever hare and brought it to about 10 yrds away from me.

we carried on intot he next field and a scan with the lamp revealed 3 rabbits ,i walked the hedge line then made my way 2 the rabbit with fly on slip ,a little run and a couple of turns and our second rabbit was added to the bag ,then another sqautter was added .we missed the next one which was a stupid slip from myself but the fourth rabbit was scooped up by fly.

it took us a good hour or so before we saw another rabbit .most of the fields were holding big amounts of hares ,i counted 9 in one field.these were left for another day .the next rabbit we ran was another squatter which fly took with ease.then to end the night we shot another hare so both dogs were slipped to retrieve ,i didnt think they had a chance but fly turned it over on some plough.

finally got home at 2am after the hour walk through the streets ,we must have looked a right pair with rabbits hanging over our shoulders .

5 rabbits and 2 hares ,with bramble only cathcing the one rabbit fly caught he rest.i am well chuffed with how shes coming along and only missed the two all night .

keith :luck:

well done you !! coming along nicely

Well done,keep it up.

rew not knocking mate but reading the post did you say you were out 6 hours and only took 5 rabbits and 2 hares,if so id rather find a new hobby,we go out for just over an hour and we take anything up to 20 rabbits, rabbit stocks must be very bad over there mate, anyways if they are scarce good on the dogs for picking them up but if i had to walk 6 hours for that amount id be pissed

thanks everyone ,irish pup it took us about an 1 hour 15 mins to get there and 1 hour and 45 mins to get back.im also having to pick my runs as flys only 11months old but your right the rabbits are scarce around me thats why i ran the two big rabbits aswell.when we are in the car we can cover alot more ground in half the amount of time and double or triple the amount of runs.thanks again

good hunting

If you were a real dog man you would not lamp hares never mind slipping a second dog in. Hares are for day light running with one dog if your dogs are no use then stick to lamping rabbits.

Yes i have over 30years worth, you are right two dogs on one hare but the difference is they are slipped together over open fields in day light with a fair start for the hare with the intention to test the dogs not to kill and never slip a dog on a pre run hare.I run my dogs single handed in day light there is nothing like it its what you call sports man ship were not out just to kill. Young Dog men need to learn this its not about the kill, there is no excuse for slipping in.

thanks for the replies im glad some enjoy my post's.a1dogs fly was just under 11 months when i took her out that night and bramble is imo below average and struggles on hares alone so you might start to see why im running the two .im out to watch my dogs perform but most importantly catch game ,no matter what method and how sporting the end result is always the same.cheers

I see you are a young guy, and it's great you are into the sport, but lamping hares this time of year isn't really on, especialy with two dogs. Wait until the winter and test your dogs on the hares, you'll find it much better !

Cheers.
