Just had my first cup of licorice tea  :x   ....I think I keep it for visitors with allergies :(
Braver than me then! :x

There was an article about asthma and pets in one of the weekend paper supplements, it did say that asthma (unlike other allergies) can take a while to develop after getting a pet. :(

I did buy a hepa filter, and never really used it as I'd stopped having a problem ( ), but we do put it on if we have allergic visitors and it did seem to help, their sneezing and streaming stopped after about an hour of it - it might help create a better environment in your 'safe' area/bedroom at night. I got mine from a poultry supplies catalogue. (w00t)

delonghi hepa filter,

All this talk about licorice started me thinking so did a search on it. Seems to be a 'cure-all' with especial effect on the respiratory system, drying up mucus etc so I thought .................... Coco!! Have ordered some in capsule form which arrived this morning. As my Vet says, anything is worth a try on Coco, so will let you all know how we progress.

Sorry to wander off topic Kitty!! Hope things work out for you, let us know how you get on with the Immunologist.

June - that must have been a bit of a shock, after 12 years. It's as if your system had suddenly had enough, or something.
Actually, I'm pretty sure it started when a certain little dog came into our lives. She's called Mouse, and loves to snuggle into my neck under my hair. She doesn't understand when I keep pushing her away from my face though, and I do feel sorry for her.

My doctor did mention that my body may have "reset" itself, and that an allergy can go, just as quickly as it came. So when I come off the tablets (which I have to do gradually), the symptoms may have gone. I don't think so though, as I still sometimes have the rhinitis quite bad (but of course that could be the grass - gets me out of mowing the lawn anyway!).

I've just read your immunotherapy link moriarte, and it seems that it might be worth trying - just going to be difficult if I have to go there (35 miles) and stay for an hour after each shot - oh well, we'll see.

Best wishes to anyone with an allergy - it can be miserable, but at least we're not on our own

Sorry, didn't read this til now, June. I have been ill, initially with a really horrible cold which has brought on - talk about tempting Providence here - my first asthma attack in over 5 years. :(

I've been looking into this, there are a number of NHS specialist allergy clinics in the UK which have the facilities give 'conventionial' immunotherapy treatment (not EPD), here is the list on the British Society for Allergy & Clinical Immunology website, perhaps there's one nearer you:

UK specialist allergy clinics

Also a couple of articles which explore the causes of allergy, and the links with autoimmune disease (which links the increase of allergy and autoimmunity to a lack of friendly bacteria/organisims in individuals who are genetically predisposed):

The defense of Dirt - from BMJ

environmental organisms as immunomodulators for immunoregulatory disorders (yes it's very dry!)

I find this interesting as all the people on autoimmunity, thyroid etc groups have severe allergies as well, there is a lot of anecdotal evidence for a connection but very little research has been done on the relationship between these disorders, as they fall between so many different disciplines (Immunology, Endocrinology, Rheumatology etc), one of the reasons why it's very difficult to get treated.
