I don't even know where to start but my 9 year old Bassenji mix was getting sick ( sleeping, not eating as well, not drinking and this morning vomited.) so we took her to the vet and they said she had kidney failure! They kept her in for 2 days this is her first night and they are pushing iv fluids into her and hoping that they clean her out! What i want to know is what are the chances of her getting better? Her test results werent that bad but she was concerned! She has never been sick in her life and all of a sudden in 3 days time they say she might not make it? I'm freakin out! I just need alittle in sight! thanks so much...

please email me if possible at aarband2005@yahoo.com

Did the vet give any indication as to why her kidneys are failing ? Acute kidney failure can be caused by toxic injury to the kidneys, decreased blood flow and oxygen delivery to the kidneys, infections, obstruction of the kidneys and prevention of urine elimination caused by a ruptured bladder...did they mention that ? So in actual fact the problem might stem from elsewhere and having a "knock-on" effect at her kidneys.

GOOD LUCK WITH HER :luck: john

All I know is that the doctor came in and said the blood test looked like it was kidney failure! whats wierd about it is that in all the paper work i have read about this, is that they either urinate too much or not enought and well she has never realy had a problem with that.. the urine isnt dark or too clear! We thought she was having problems with her joints because she was acting like it hurt to walk but then the doc says this! I'm so worried I guess we will find out what the blood test shows tomorrow at 11 after 12 hours of iv fluids!!! Thanks so much for replying!

Daft question...but has she had any bumps to her kidneys ? I would recommend a scan. It would show up possible bruising etc. Theres a deeper scan too which i forget the technical term..it goes into the kidney. worth thinking about

Good luck with the test results :luck: :luck:

Kidney failure is not necessarily irreversible.

As John says, your vet needs to try and establish

the root cause of the failure before deciding on

treatment.

Keeping my fingers crossed for you :)

Yeah Im hoping that the test come back ok in the morning...I called to check on her and they said she is acting ok right now..more alert, and she said that she was confused at her lab work and how well she is acting! they don't know whast causing her kidneys to do this! I'm so worried! Shes my baby, I have had her since i was 12 and I don't know how well I will do if i lose her! I'm going crazy lol...

I never seen this coming at all!!!!

:luck: :luck: Lots of luck and positive thoughts for you and Tipper :luck: :luck:

Hi, I have been away and only just seen your post. Have you had any news yet?

My Whippet dog Alfie went into acute renal failure after stealing and eating about 20 Ibuprofen tablets from my bag  I can't remember exactly what his urea and creatinine levels were, but the vet said they were about 4 times what they should be and that she didn't think he would survive

After 4 days on a drip he had made a dramatic improvement and was allowed home, where his levels were back to normal very quickly  He has had no further problems with his kidneys thankfully, and I am aware that he was very lucky :)

Alfie was a lot younger at the time, and as Stormy says, there could be other reasons behind your dog's renal failure, but I hope you get some good news on her condition :luck:
