My little boy, Skippy (1 yr 4 mnths) had his annual vaccination last Wednesday and suffered no ill effects at the time.

On Friday night he was very quiet, not his normal self - by Saturday he became very weak and depressed so we took him to our local vet who put him on a drip overnight and all day Sunday and advised from his blood test it looked like a virus and was probably a delayed reaction to his vaccination. He returned home with us on Sunday night much better, but refused to drink water or eat from his bowl. He would only eat chicken, and only if fed one piece at a time by hand - and as long as the plate containing the rest of the food was out of sight - he seems to have developed a phobia of plates/bowls/food/water. He licked water from my fingers and then had a 50/50 mixture of milk/water from a flat plate after much encouragement (wouldn't drink from a bowl). Monday, although still not drinking or eating on his own he was was much brighter and more his normal self, and we were hopeful he'd be back to "normal" pretty soon. Yesterday (Tuesday) evening he became depressed again and seemed to be experiencing pain when he sat/layed down or moved once he was layed down - he gave a cry each time he moved - but was still keen to run around and play ball and for us to touch him. He's lethargic and depressed when he's not playing ball. He's also still not drinking on his own but is happy for me to drop water in the side of his mouth on a teaspoon - he seems to want the water.

I took him back to the vet first thing this morning and they are running some tests on him today as they have no idea what's wrong with him. They are not sure now whether this is as a result of the vaccination or something else unrelated.

Has anyone heard of these symptoms before?

Any advice would be gratefully appreciated.

Thank you

Rosie

:( Oh I hope it's nothing serious.

I'm afraid I dont have any help to offer but just want to wish you good luck for finding out what's wrong and hope he picks up very soon :luck: :luck: :luck: :huggles:

Poor lad .......Do you think he's experiencing pain in his joints or just generally all over ??? ........If he's starting to dehydrate then his body may become tender ........Try and get as much fluid as possible down him as this will help flush his system through .........Try some live yogurt as well ........It does sound like it may well be vaccine related though ........ :luck: :luck: with him and I hope Skippy feels better soon ....Hannah :)

You could try syringing fluids down him. The same way you have been doing with a teaspoon.

Thank you for your advice.

After a day on a drip at the vet he was very bouncy when we picked him up last night and is no longer in pain. The vet said he had a virus of "unknown origin" but he seems to be on the mend now.

After much encouragement he is drinking water from a flat tray.

We will obviously be keeping a close eye on him, but hopefully he'll be back to his normal mischievous self soon.

Thats good news. It just bothers me how many of these mysterious unknown virus' there are about.

I hope Skippy is on the mend soon. :luck: :huggles: :luck:

Hiya, so glad he is feeling better, as it could still have been a vaccine reaction i would not under any circumstances have another booster. Jan

Its so worrying when they are ill, glad you have it sorted. :)
