as some of you may know one of my dogs has pancreatitis...and has to have low fat food.

he is fed nature menu/diet now and he enjoys it but as he has no other titbits he is losing weight...especially now his exercise is around 5 miles walking a day plus 1 hour off lead.

i have been giving him stoneground wholemeal bread lately without it upsetting his digestion but wondered if anyone else had any ideas on homemade low fat food...like scrambled egg or goats milk ...would these be too rich

any help would be appreciated

thanks

give vitalin a call they do many types of specialist feeds for varying conditions, they will send free samples of 2.5 kilo bags to help find the right feed and will assist everystep of the way , worth a call? hope that helps mate?

Hiya, pure porridge oats are good for puttting on weight(not ready brek)with goats milk cooked like normal porridge. To make it more tasty you can mix the nature diet with it.I know that sounds :x but they seem to like it. Hope this helps as oats are very low in fat.

Just a thought off the top of my head, and I think I recall you used to be a veterinary nurse so if you don't know I'm sure you'll know someone who does? Could you give Complan build up drinks? The vanilla one isn't too overpowering in flavour and they're full of all the goodies a human needs, I just don't know if they're suitable for dogs and also what the fat content of them is? There's also the issue over milk which may be a problem but it may be worth looking into?

Good luck either way. :luck:

thanks...to be honest when i worked at the vets most pet owners needed help with weight loss rather than weight gain

also most vets do not know that much about the ins and outs of diets....they generally just advise patients to use prescription diets low fat/high fibre but he wont eat them :(

i asked my vet that diagnosed caspers problems for advice and he said basically that homemade diets were not nutritionally sound and i should feed him a complete diet

as with most things good help and advice comes mostly from big companies who are interested in selling their product and as im interested in a homemade diet advice was difficult to find...

i will look into the build up drinks though

oh you are a star! :D ...thankyou very much

after reading through all the info....i thought i would put this bit on for anyone else interested or needing help in the future .....

"- Sweet potatoes, white potatoes

- Oatmeal, rice or barley. These will hopefully add calories lost by feeding a low fat diet. "

Excellent topic. I wouldnt overdo the barley it can be very heating and may cause itchy skin.

Hi Kaz did Pm you but I don't know if you got it we used to give him pasta and rice both which he loves potatoes he will eat and also we gave him boiled barley in small amounts

Hi Kaz rabbit meat is almost fat free & will help with weight gain

i can get you plenty of rabbits Kaz all prepared ready to go just give me a ring. I can also supply in bulk :- "

Maybe we could swap dogs for a while Kaz  Kobi need to still loose a bit :- " - so your dog can come here and eat his diet - see if it makes any difference and you can have Kobi and see if he looses any.
