Does anyone have any ideas on what is going on here.

Tascha had her first season in Aug last year, she's had another one in March this year.

Ever since her first season, every male dog that comes across her tries to mount her. It's come to the crunch tonight when a Shar pei has tried it on, Tascha got narked and nipped at the dog, and the dogs owner has given me a mouthful.

Is this a common occurence with bitches? Do they forever smell like they're in season? I've tried rubbing a bit of lavender oil round her back end before going out, but it doesn't put prospective males off.

Please help, I'm going spare.

sorry havnt a clue why . Have you tried bathing her , ? As for the Shar Pei owner  they shoulnt have let their dog get so close , serves it right in my book

I mean, would you like a stranger smelly your ***** No dont answer that

You can get a spray for when they are in season that deters dogs. (its is lemon scented). You could try that. Don't know why they fancy her all the time though

I agree with Jax, the owners of the Shar Pei should have kept their dog under better control. No lady wants her bits constantly smelt at especially by an ugly wrinkly thing (don't like Shar Pei's, can't you guess).

As for the aroma she's giving off, have you thought that she might have a hormone issue/problem. I had a bitch where the dogs were constantly interested in her and I discovered she had a problem and the end result was that I had her spayed. Which solved both the hormone problem and the dogs interest in her.

Speaking from the other end of the 'problem', our dog seems to be able to detect a bitch that has been in season upto about 6 weeks afterwards, and sometimes about a month before. Don't know whether this is because he's got a sensitive nose, or whether some bitches just secrete a faint odour for longer. Not really an issue, if it looks like he's going to be a pest, he just goes immediately on a short lead; I wouldn't blame the object of his desire if she told him off either.

Funny that Jan about you suggesting a possible hormone problem, after we neutered our dog he was plagued by other males wanting to mount him and after speaking to the vet he said that for a while after the op the hormones are all over the place and can make the neuter smell to an entire like a bitch,it did eventually go away but he also mentioned the fact that in some neuters the smell never goes away as it can affect the hormones permenently,so maybe that is what has happened with your bitch? Maybe when she came into season her hormones have stuck in the "on" position?? Just a thought? I think I'd be off for a chat with my vet as it cant be much fun for the poor girl. :(

Season in bitches is not just matter of the 3 weeks when it is obvious. The hormonal changes start weeks before, then afterwards it takes again some time to settle, many bitches go to some kind of false pregnancy. Few go the whole hog, lactating and trying to nurse their toys. I often detect just a little stroppines and restlessness in my girls about the 2 months mark. And at that time i often notice other dogs, including my other bitches, being interested in her behind. Experienced stud dogs know when it is the right time, pet dogs mount anything that moves (or not). So it may not be your girl but the silly dogs she meets.

As for the shar-pei owner; if a dog pesters other dogs it will get nipped, that is how they learn, it is the part of the socialization. Your bitch has a right to be in the park without being molested.

Thanks for all the advice, I'm going to nip here along to the vets today, I don't want to chance things if her hormones are all over the place. I guess a quick blood test will give us the answers.

Well my first thought was she probably picked up a slight infection which would make her interesting, perhaps your vet will just give her some antibiotics today.

Tell the dogs owners that they should keep their dogs under control, I imagine you dont let your bitch slide herself underneath THEM.

Talking about this with OH, the extended 'interesting' phase seems only been a problem with bitches on their first or second seasons, so perhaps it's something to do with hormones raging at puberty, before they eventually settle down.

Thanks Moriate, I'm happy to wait at least another season and see if it settles. The vet wasn't too helpful, just said that some bitches were more attractive to dogs than others. If it doesn't settle by her next season, I will be going back and playing hell on that vet!

I'm afraid that he is right!!! Some bitches do seem to be constantly more attractive to dogs. My friend had an ESS bitch that dogs always tried to mount when she was out. She was like it until she died but had normal seasons and a couple of litters and was then spayed but dogs were still attracted to her.

This is my Tilly whippet all over, every dog trys to bonk her (w00t) She has a season every 5 months, has had a litter, is perfectly healthy but males just love her !! Thankfully she has now learnt to tell them to Naff off ! in no uncertain terms! Well apart from Freeway who can bonk her as much as he likes

Another thing with Tilly is she likes bonking all the other girls here

WHAT ARE THEY LIKE !!!!! (w00t)
