Hi everyone,

Bailey is 6 months old in two days time and I am going to be taking him to the vets for his check up.

Bailey unfortunately only has one ball :- " and I was looking for some advice on what is right for him. I am not looking to breed from him but don't wish to castrate him unnecessarily, but feel if one ball is inside it may be the better option for his own health. I wondered if there were any risks in having only one ball having dropped (I am pressuming the other little chap is hiding inside! )

Look forward to all your advice and thank you :huggles:

sometimes the second testicle descends on its own and there is enough time as he is only very young just now - on other occassions it can me manipultaed down by a vet who is competant at doing so - there are specialists - i know if one but its over in wales - other times for the sake of complications it is best advised to castrate - i think all of these options would be best covered by the vet you are taking him to as a lot of people will have opinions but each dog has its unique problem.

very best wishes for your boy

sound advice there  axle, my youngest dog, only has the one. hes just turning a year next week. we're waiting for him to fill out a bit, as its clearly not descending, and then having him 'done', bless him :D i personally dont agree with neutering unless needed, especially too young, but with a retained ball, theres the risk of it turning cancerous :(

My 2 year old whippie only had 1 down. When he was 14 months he had the one in his groin area removed. I did not have him neutered so he is a one ball whippie!!!

All you can do is be guided by your vet :luck: :luck:

Hi willow only had one also. We had him castrated and it meant extra time and surgery to remove the one still inside. Our vet advised castration and removal of the ineternal one as there is a 25% risk of it turning malignant later on. Willow is 2. They make a lateral incision and follow the blood supply to find it..it could be high up near the kidney or lower down. No regrets at having it done. It has meant that no off lead in garden or on park for 2 weeks in total. He is desperate for a good run so roll on Sat I say! Apparently males take longer to heal internally and the stitches had to be removed after 14 days at the earliest. I was pretty shocked at the bill!! Around 300.00 for everything including the castrate, antibiotics, pain killers etc. :))

I was recently sent some photos of the testisles of a greyhound that was castrated due to a retained testical. The dog had been adopted quite recently but was an old dog .His health was failing and the owner was reccomended castration as they diagnosed possible cancer. The vet was a frind of the owner and he was allowed in the surgery whlst the operation took place.

I couldn't post the piccies as they are on my desk top which has crashed at the moment I'm on my laptop so cann't access them at the moment but the cancerous testicle was the size of a tennis ball. The dog isnow healthy and happy After reading his story I would never heistate in having a dog with a retained testical removed

This is great advice, thank you. Haven't had a dog with one chap before so will see what vet advises next week but at the same time he still has a while yet before a decision is to be made. Hope the men reading this thread are feeling too queezy!!! :sweating:

Its nice to know its more common than I thought. I suppose I need to wait until he has kind of fully grown and see if anything changes (think the one inside isn't coming out! :- " ) The possibility it could turn canerous scares me enough as it is, so will let you know what the vet says. :D Wishing you all the best with Axle too :luck: :huggles:

Haven't heard this before, you must have a superb vet to have carried that out. One ball whippie - quality

Bless little Willow, sounds like the castration of dog with one testical inside is a lot more complicated - haven't even thought about the cost yet - ouch :- " Oh well the joys of having whippets (w00t) At least you have kindly given me pre-warning so thank you. I bet the painkillers are so needed, poor little boys! Lovely to hear that it all went well for Willow

Oh my gosh the poor greyhound, sounds horrendous. Lovely to hear that it was a happy ending :D

I honestly think that the castration route will be the one Bailey will be headed down but at least he has a year as a FULL (half) MAN
