My 3 year old bitch was being spayed yesterday and when she was coming round from the anaesthetic she had a seizure. The vet said it was odd as she had been doing so well and was alert and happy, in fact they were about to call me to say I could take her home when she had the fit.

I have spent a very sleepless night, as they kept her in doggie hospital last night and I have to call this morning to see how she is. Anyone else had this experience with their seemingly healthy and v happy dog having a fit?

The vet thinks that she may be epileptic but said that only time would tell .....

My other whippet Daisy is all unsettled and keeps looking for Ella (she was the Barnesmore that I got through here who needed rehoming)

I am soooo very upset and anxious I didnt sleep all night..... :( :(

I can't help Anne, but I do hope Ella is OK, please keep us updated.

Thats awful news :( hope she makes a full recovery :luck:

Wishing all of you the best :luck:

Jodie had a fit right out the blue about 4 years ago, She jumped of the sofa and started fitting, we took her straight to the vets who tryed to stop her and a few hours later we moved her to the royal vet collage and she was under heavy sedation for 3 days and 4 nights, everytime they brought her round she fitted again!!

By the 4th morning we decided to let her go if she didn't stop and that morning she did!!!

They kept her in a did blood tests, xrays, scanned her brain, took fluild from her brain and lots more tests and it came back as idiopathic epileptic fit....... in other words no idea what caused it??????? Everything came back clear?!

They put her on anti fit drugs (can't remember name ILKC will know) and over a year got her right of of them and Jodie made a full recovery within weeks and never had a fit again.

It was a heartbreaking time and thank god she was insured (£2500 bill). I really feel for you and wish you the best, and hope my little Jodies story shows you these things can happen and so can a full recovery

Keeping everything crossed for you, Vicki

Hopefully this was a one off episode - it happens sometimes! Mostly when someone brings their dog in reporting a fit, I do absolutely nothing about it - just explain to the owner what to do if it happens again, how long to leave it before calling us if another fit occurs, and to keep a diary. Often there is never another fit as long as the dog lives - but sometimes it becomes frequent and requires medication. Usually a fit with no other accompanying signs or behavioural changes is nothing sinister.

Remember that anaesthetics depress the brain and so theoretically have the potential to disrupt the normal electrical activity. It will hopefully be the only fit she ever has - and even if she has more, it's not something that can't be treated. :luck:

One of my Borzois had a fit twice in his life. Both times it happened soon after a very traumatic experience. I just kept him quiet, warm and made sure he is not swallowing his tongue ( I read somewhere that is what you do for an epileptic person). Both fits happened when he was very young - 10 weeks and about 4 months- and that was it . He lived till he was 11 years without further problems.

Hope it was also one off for your girl :luck:

An update on Ella, she came home yesterday walking like i do after a heavy session down the pub (I think it was the Diazepam that the vet gave her).

She is sleeping alot, but is eating and drinking well so hopefully this is just a one off incident. The vet wants to see her back in two days to check her out but she seems a lot happier and my other whippet is happy cos she is getting fresh chicken as well as Ella. She thinks all of her Christmas's have come at once.

Thanks to all of you for your messages of support :0) Ella thanks you as well

Pheww I think the seizure thing was a one off. Ella is doing well, eating well and is going to the vets today to get checked over and her wound checked.

Thanks for all your posts

I am so pleased Anne, :huggles: to Ella.
