Hi everyone,

I am after a bit of advice please. We have a 5 month old Whippetx Greyhound pup called Cracker,as you regulars may know.

He is out of Cracked itxGreyhound. He is a super pup.in every way,but has started stalking other dogs, including mine, and nipping. He caught Spike, the Lurcher, yesterday, and punctured his thigh. We have been letting them off separately sine it happened,as it is the last thing i want.Has anybody had similar experiences, and what did you do.We are very firm with him,and want to break this bad habit..

Hi,

I have had dogs for twenty years,i have have never had a dog stalk, chase and nip.

Not sure if its just the fact that he is very keen.

Sorry but mine dont and they all run together, all four. I would prob let the youngster off first to get rid of some energy, and as you have your others close the youngster will try to get them to run, may jump and nip and as they are all within your control you can easily show disaproval of this behavior

Its hard to control if the behavior is happening away from your control area jan

the best way to stop that is to take him out with a dog that will not tolirate being nipped you can tell him 10 times

a adult dog pack leader will only have to tell him once

i take any pups like that out with my terrier they only try it once or twice she puts them in there place its soon a thing of the past and no harm done

hope this helps

Hi Jan,

Thanks for that, mine have never done it either. They have always run together, and i have never come across it before.

My Lurcher and other dogs race around together, but its not persuing,if you know what i mean, playful chase, this is different.

We are now letting him off on his own first, its a shame, but i will do whatever it takes to stop this unwanted behaviour.I know part of it is over jealous puppyness, but i won,t put up with biting.

Hi Amanda :) Won't let mine off together, cause mine would do exactly the same. The urge to chase and grab takes over.We school them to be one track minded. To chase the lure and grab it.Unfortunately this is a by product of doing just that.

Hiya Karen,

You have confirmed what we thought. He has definetely got worse since we have started training him.He is very keen on the rag,and what you say makes total sense, because Lady is the same.Did you find that yours were fine racing.I am panicking that he will chase other dogs when we race him,He is such a gorgeous dog in every other way.I will not let him off with the others now.He leaves Finn alone as he tells him off,but Spike is very passive, and Lady just biffs him.

Thanks for your advice.

Sorry dont agree karren it is bad manners and at 5 months of age the pup is trying his luck and getting away with it

if not stopped and just ignored it could move on to his racing

not trying to tell you what you already know but in this case it happens to much when pups are young .And me being a puppy farmer lol i see it more than most

at this age very easy to stop

Don't panic  The more one track minded he is on the lure the better  Just don't be tempted to put him in with another dog ( I know thats a way off yet  ) until he's got an equal if not better chance of getting to the lure 1st..He'll be fine

Hi Gary,

Finn, the other Greyhound cross, puts him in his place, but Spike is so passive,he wont nail him.I think he will push his luck before long.He was playing with two Rotties today, and he left them alone!!

Thanks for the advice Gary.

HE IS BULLYING YOU OTHER DOG BECAUSE HE CAN AND FOR NO OTHER REASON

BIT LIKE WHEN YOU PUT A DOG ON QUARRY IT MUST KNOW AND BE TAUGHT WHAT IT CAN CHASE

OTHER DOGS ARE A NO NO SAME AS SHEEP AND HORSES CANT JUST SAY ITS COS HES A RACER.

Agree that pups need putting in their place Gary, but that can happen in a kennel or home enviroment.Much safer than allowing the telling off to happen while they are running about.Think this could have adverse affects.JMO

A DOG WHEN CHASEING IS IN A DIFFERANT STATE OF MIND TO WHEN IT IS SITTING AT HOME

PLAYFUL BEHAVIOUR IS GREAT BUT MUST NOT BE TOILRATED WHEN RUNNING OR CHASING

AND BITTING AN OTHER DOG ON THE ASS IS NOT ACCEPTABLE

MY OPINION BUT GO WITH KARENS SHE IS SURE SHE KNOWS WHAT SHES TALKING ABOUT

Thanks Gary and Karen,

I think i know which way to go now.Def,not let off with the others for a bit, some one to one.

And i agree, that at 5 months,he is a baby, and we can address it.I also agree that biting a dog on the ass,is not acceptable.

You are both experts in your field, and i have carefully listened to you both.

Thanks again,i will let you know how we get on.

Before I started racing my dogs were let run wild together. Now I know better but have ended up with a few dogs that are only interested in chasing each other. The one that I race is exercised on her own and the only thing she chases is the lure and the cat over the road.!!!!!!!!Hope you sort things out. :luck:

Hi,

I have always let my other pups off with no problem at all,so i don,t think it applies to all pups. One was a Lurcher, the other a WhippetxGreyhound. They are both very sociable and and certainly did,nt cause any problems at all.
