well said

So back to my question - what should I (as a first time dog owner), do when my pups want to go "flying over" to meet other dogs? - Talking about on-lead etiquette I guess!!!

I think all dogs should have good manners, they learn this thought being pack animals, i often find down this way that i have problems with ordinary dog walkers who just don't under stand how dogs should meet, greet or behave together. You see them on the beach all the time with there nasty little dogs on leads, mine go up to them and try and greet in normal dog fashion, which ends up with the owners screaming and shouting, keep your dogs away mine don't like other dogs, (why) because the poor little buggers are never aloud to interact with others, and the famous saying is ( I don't let mine off because he won't come back) and I say, well if you never let him off how the hell can he learn to come back?????? :- Dogs are and always will be pack animals. JMO, Di
I also have a problem with strange dogs coming over to "greet" mine when my dogs are on the lead, not because my dogs are nasty just prefer if other ppls dogs kept well away. Yes dogs are pack animals but different packs dont always interact well when they come across each other and there will be tension.
YOUR STATMENT TELLS ME THAT YOUR NOT CONFIDENT ABOUT THE BEHAVIOUR OF YOUR PACK WHEN APPROCHED BY A SRANGE DOG . IF YOU HAVE A PROBLEM WITH OTHER DOGS APROCHING YOURS THEN YOUR DOGS WILL PICK THAT UP AND HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM

IM SORRY TO SAY THIS STEMS FROM THE AMOUNT OF BAD OWNERS THAT LET THERE UNCONTROLABLE DOGS DO WHAT THEY LIKE EVEN ATTACK

I DO AGREE ITS BETTER TO BE SAFE THAN SORRY .BUT AS FOR A ENJOYABLE WALK I DONT THINK SO

IN AN IDEAL WORLD ALL THE DOGS WOULD GET ON BIT LIKE K9 REALLY LOL

GARY

JUST MY OPINION :D :luck: :luck:

Its not really the behavior of my pack i worry about, tend to only walk 3 dogs at a time anyway. just if approached by and aggresive dog natures reaction is fight or flight mine being on a lead takes away the possibility of flight. which really only leaves one option. my dogs are all well socialised and are friendly dogs but have to think if they feel intimidated or preasure by another dog when on a lead and no way of getting away then I would have to say yeah they probably will react in an aggresive manner.

I dont like strange dogs coming at mine,so i try to do the same.I am lucky,as we have a large field, where most people know each other, and respect each others space.I know the Lurcher will ring to another dog,so he is put on the lead asap. Not all dogs want to be harassed,so its about thinking about others.I think everybody has there own way of doing things, and if it works for them, then great.I have enjoyed reading the different replies.I have owned dogs all my life, but i do not know everything!!Thats where k9,and people like Gary Karen etc,are very valuable for there advice.

In the summer I go out in the evernings for a long walk take about 6 dogs

as soon as i sit down they sometimes all get me I never know when its comming its the best feeling in the world

and a little naughty treat for them . w00t always puts me in a good mood :D

GARY :clown:

:)) It brought such a smile to my face when you described what happens when you sit down, I get the same, and what a feeling it is. My dogs trust and respect me and that's how they show their love. (don't get me wrong) they can be little buggers sometimes too. I honestly think that if you have a good relationship with your fellow creatures they will

put there heart and soul into repaying you. :)) (and that's all i ask for) Di

The best tip I would give anybody with a dogs is watch Cesar millan, he's got it right, I know not everybody will agree but hell it works. ;)

THE BEST DOG TRAINER THAT AS EVER LIVED IN MY MIND I NEVER STOP LEARNING NEW THINGS WITH HIM

I HAVE ALL HIS DVDS IM SAD I KNOW

I have eyes in my backside, and if i do get caught out,and the pup tanks over to a dog we don,t know,i am very humble, and say a million sorrys,it usually works.

HI ALL

well i need advice please , i take my dogs out two by two

well one of mine has been giving me probs for a while now where its got to a point i dont enjoy walking him

He goes out with my best behaved ( the lurcher) but while walking if we meet another dog he usually goes mad at them , pulling like mad or up on his hind legs barking like mad - he has been well socialised since a pup is he protecting me ??? he a mummys boy at home

Today i got really upset when we were in field i kept him on lead while lady passed with v. old collie waited till she was some distance away and let him off , he went flying towards the collie circling it while barking his head off i had to run and grab him luckily the lady was ok bout him , i couldnt say sorry enough to her .

My oh reckons he just wants to play and was trying to get collie to run but its got to the point where i wont take him in field if other dogs there , he does run around and plays nicely with a few dogs

I dont want him to get to point were he nip a dog was thinking of muzzling him just in case ? but im not enjoying him out but he adorable at home

Advice would be great

Thank you

I would like to say a big thank you to the person who pm ed me

You have given be some great advice and now i hope i will start to enjoy my walks again soon

So cheers

OK while we giving advice could some one help me. I have a 10 month pup who when in the house or kennel will jump in your arms when asked to. But put him in a field and he runs off and won't come back until he wants to. I've tried just walking away even as far as going back home ( My fence looks onto the field) and he just kept walking and sniffing didn't even notice I wasn't there. I give him some biscuit the other day he came for it and then I let him go play did this a few times so he didn't think he was coming in the house every time I caught him he came back every time after 10 Min's a give him his biscuit and brought him in. Thought I had him sorted the next day I did the same and he came to me sniffed then ran off, couldn't catch him. After 10 Min's I finally caught him give him his treat then told him to go play. I walked away and he followed when I asked him what he wanted he jumped into my arms. The big problem is when I take him to the track he's doing 150 yds great then goes to the lure sniffs it then off running for 10 Min's before I can catch him. think he'll make a good bend dog never gets tired.

i Take 4 dogs out at a time and the smallist dog 19lb black  i have the same problem with" going for other dog's" he' really good off the lead and will come back when i call him even if he see the other dog but the min you have him on the lead he starts, i have to say jimmy's the  dog lol is not as bad with me,

yet he's all me in the house to the point where he not go near anyone who calls round all my other dogs will go to people except jimmy he stays behide me, hes the same at racing only wants me,

hes never gone for other dogs on the track, or when racing,

when Tony take him out he really bad to the point where he will not take him now, , the reason being if jimmy cant get to the dog walking by he will have a bite at the dog next to him (w00t)

( i also watch Cesar millan DVD's ) and agree he's the best,

i do think its because jimmy feels less secure when he's away from me,

Our Whitey-(Coral) at age 8 is just beginning to get out of this problem-most days now-he can't be bothered with his normal 'snapping' at strange dogs.

We've tried all sorts over the years with him-

He's never done it whilst racing though which is a bonus

you always worry Karen ! well i have, that its something i have done to make him like this, ?? but i dont think it is, anyway its nice to know i only have another 6 or so years of it lol

The litter I had out of spellbound were like that. i don't walk jet because she still attacks any dog that moves and she's 6 yet she never fought on the track. zippo her brother would hide behind me if a dog came near yet we couldn't put him off levels with another dog because he would fight. you would think it would be the other way round.

Hi Sharon

Jimmy is out off Zac ( Cracked it ) but as Spellbound in his breeding i.e Tanglewood his mum.s breeding ( Spellbound + Stormdamage ), really dont think that as anything to do with him going for other dog, never had a problem with Spellbound or for that matter any off my other dog out of Jake ( Spellbound ) Hellbound, outbound, Bound too, and grandaughter hellsdouble, also had other dogs out off Zac (Cracked it ) who i'v never had such a problem with, think alot of whippets have a problem with other breeds when they meet on walks but with Jimmy its not so much a problem more like he wants to kill lol
