Hi all, ive been slowly introducing our dogs to some natural feeding such as chicken wings, tripe, etc after reading all the good comments on k9 about it and went to the butchers today for some marrowbones,

unfortunatley, they didnt have any but he gave me aload of rib bones ( pork i presume) they are pretty huge and obviously uncooked but im not sure if they are ok or not? so i thought id put a post on here to check before i give them to the dogs...ive popped them in the freezer for now.

i know pork isnt recommended for dogs, but they only have the smallest amount of meat atchully on them.

Do you think they are ok?

The only ribs I feed are from lamb, occasionally they have some beef as well. I don't think I would feed pork personally as it is not usually recommended for dogs, but you can if you want... sorry thats not much help is it! :b

sorry if i sound thick but why is pork not recommened to give to dogs

I wouldn't feed raw pork to dogs either. Not sure why other than i was always told it is harmful to them.

When I MENTIONED AGES AGO THAT WE DONT GET PORK `FLAVORED FOOD , cANNED OR OTHERWISE , kAREN SAID IT WAS BECAUSE eVERYTHING IS USED ON A PIG SO THERE ISNT ANYTING TO USE , sHE DIDNT MENTION THAT IT WAS BAD FOR DOGS

Fed pork to mine without any ill effects just do not overdo it though is all i can advise.

I heard something about a parasite in pork or something, or was it that its too rich? :b

i wouldnt normally feed 'whole' pork anyway, and these ribs only have the very teeniest little bits attached, Im concerned really more about the bone itself being OK, i.e the density.

OH just looked at them and he thinks they might be cow ribs not pork as they are pretty big! I didnt think to ask the butcher like an idiot! :teehee:

The reason pork was never recommended to be fed to dogs is due to tapework cysts in the meat - this was the traditional reason why it was never recommended I believe, but I don't think it is true nowadays due to the intense farming and medication available.

However I don't think it contains that much benefit, not as much as red meat and tripe or chicken wings - so I don't bother!

If the ribs are as huge as you say they are more likely to be beef ribs.

I think the pork issue is a bit of an old wifes tail, we have been told about it but dont really know why.

But what about pigs ears, snotters, trotters and even bum holes (pigs that is) that you see on stalls ??

Or is it because they say we humans taste like pork and we dont want to give dogs any ideas ?

Thats a point! never thought of that  , i.e pig ears , etc!

I dont bother feeding pork as 'main food' anyway, these ribs were just bought as a 'treat' really as butcher didnt have marrowbones,,,, :(

Do you think the density of them will be ok? They seen pretty tough but i wouldnt of thought they'd be as tough as marrowbones....i was just concerned about them splintering but maybe they wouldnt do that as long as not cooked?

a man posted on here once, can't remember which thread and said he was a dog nutritionist and that dogs do not have the enzyme to digest pork.

I did p.m. him to ask about pigs ears, but never got a reply :- "

They have a terrible time trying to hang them up on hooks...

:D

I can't find the thread now, but someone on K9 said they sometimes gave their dogs a whole ribcage and that it was great for development of muscles in shoulders and neck etc. Not sure what animal the ribcage was from...

I always thought the problem with some bones was that very dense ones from weight-bearing parts of the body are liable to shatter. In which case, it stands to reason that ribs should be okay as they don't weight-bear.

If it's any help, I gave Josie a rib of something while we were on holiday (didn't think to ask the butcher what animal, but I think judging by size it was a cow) and she ate most of the meat off, crunched one end, and then left it in the garden. And she's been fine ever since!

Josie has the occasional meal of minced pork too. I think I might steer clear of it until I've researched this "enzyme" business... but it seems a bit odd when we give pig's ears and snouts etc.

Do you mean to say the dont look at the chickens as food?

Mine are fed mainly on dried food with meat, and I know that the dried food has a lot of corn in it and I think that is why they like running in corn stubble fields coz it reminds them of feed time ! ;)

Tons of raw feeders feed their dogs pork with no problem.

I give my girls ribs (if they're large - they are probably beef) for recreation, but they do tend to eat most of the bone as well. On the days they get them in the afternoon I skip their evening meal.

I keep an eye out as sometimes there are pieces that *I* feel are too sharp, so they never get them unsupervised.

Hi-life brand dog food in the pouches and cans has a goodish percentage of pork in it. Willow and Eddie love it and have it as a treat, it's never given them the trots or anything so they must be able to digest it I should think.

Just to say thanks for replies on this thread, I lost track of it so hadnt checked replies for a while!

Gave them the ribs and were fine with them
