Hi I'm looking for some advice please.

I am not sure if my plans for the weekend were 'adjusted' by a whippet I love called Henry.

My question is can whippets malinger?

Henry and I have been racing once with the sussexlongdogs had a great time met lovely dogs and people. 4th out of four four times, had a consistency that I was proud of, and I thought I had said all the right things 'its the taking part that's important- not the winning' 'better to have lost at racing, then never raced at all' etc...

So last week I had a chat with Henry about going to meet the good folk of Maidstone and Kent and having a trial with them, he seemed up for it at the time.

On Saturday we did a bit of pre race training- nothing too strenuous a walk in the local park. We walked and talked, as we do, planning our route and wondering if we should take a picnic. We paid little heed to the weather forecast- we might be from London but we're not southern softees we picnic rain or no rain!

Anyway to cut this getting longer story short- I detected a limp on Saturday evening long after we had returned from the walk. Could find no sign or symptom of injury etc bar a little difficulty in weight bearing on his rt back leg.

Obviously taking every precaution with my loved one we abandoned any idea of racing and went onto 24hr bed rest(especially under the duvet) tlc and diet suitable to tempt from the sick bed.

Then the rain came ..... more bed rest..... limp less as Sunday wore on. Lo and behold Monday came no limp, but more rain... more bedrest.

So do people think whippets can malinger or should I persevere and get to Kent- just not tell him we're going?

Or fellow football fans do you think there may be a clue in his name and he is taking a lead from his namesake Thierry?

would appreciate your views

No advise but my Mum's whippet was hit by a a car when she was 10 months old .For weeks she limped and the vet said she was all healed. She had fractured her pelvis in 2 places.

One day the were walking along the road and unknown t them I was behind them walking my own dogs and Milly wasn't limping .As soon as I shouted to them she started limping.

10 weeks further on Milly was still insisting she could only walk on 3 legs then all of a sudden she came in season and shock horror the bad leg was forgotten about and she was perfectly sound and now 18 months on has not limped again.

Are you sure he hadnt stood on a sharp stone and bruised his pad?

Rosa used to be chief malingerer in our house, if she wasn't getting enough attention she would put on the 'dying swan' act...

"mum!mum! i have stomach ache, i need a blankie and a cuddle" ..or..

"mum!mum! i'm just gonna stand here in front of you shaking for no reason till you start to worry, give me a good check over, then wrap me up in your coat for a cuddle to make me better"

now it seems her grandson Owen has been taking tips from his gran, at the SKC champ show last week he was fine and bouncy till time came to move for the judge, then it was

" ouchi, ouchi, i'm gonna limp intermitently round this ring to make people think you are a terrible nasty mum that shows lame dogs...HA!!"

"then i'm gonna go straight back to being fine and bouncy as soon as we leave the ring cos i know you will see the funny side and laugh just like i'm doing at you now"

maybe i should have stuck with my cat, at least she was a little soldier, when she got hit by a car and was lame after coming back from the surgery, she would hobble round the corner when she thought no one was looking but suck it up and do her damndest to walk straight when she was walking past... bless her

Apparently I starve my whippie (The Supermodel) to death several times a day and on a daily basis.

Just as she breathes her last her front right leg becomes detached from her body and can no longer take her weight. This results in howling with the snouty end pointed at the food barrel or chewy box, followed by circling at speed to catch the tail just before it falls off too! This is performed especially at great speed and volume the minute a visitor appears so I have to explain the Starvation plans!

Given every hour is not allotted for meal-times I give her cuddles and whisper 'shame' and other sweet nothings into her ear and miraculously the leg re-appears and forms a secure link to the ground once again!!!! (and the tail remains attached to her bum.)

Upon feeding (which, despite her claims to the contrary, happens twice a day) she retires to her bed giving me such a look of disdain that I feel duty bound to give her a biscuit for dessert!

My dog is due to win an BAFTA (Beautiful Animal of Food Total Aquisition) if she manages to limp onstage with a misplaced leg.

Hillarious (w00t)

Izzy has frequent shakes whenever she suspects we are going to do something she won't be involved in, or simply doesn't want us to do!

People don't believe it until they see it.
