Would appreciate any thoughts on a problem when out wit my 2 dogs.

I have a greyhoundxlab and a whippetx. they get on well and are fantastic together.

However when out off lead, my lurcher wants to chase but then bite pook murphey on the neck, poor muphey is so scared he will not budge from me. Any ideas other than letting them off one at a time. PS she does not do it to other dogs.

Wearing muzzles when exercising should do the trick,my rather domineering dog always did this to my other dog and on a couple of occasions actually took pieces out of the poor boy.It got so the underdog wouldnt move from me so I bought muzzles and once the under dog realized he wasn't going to be bitten he began to run again, occasionally they do "barge" into each other but at least they can run together again.Always keep an eye on them when exercising in muzzles to avoid mishap and remove them when they have finished running to allow easier breathing.Hope this helps,Morganna :sorcerer:

Thanks ever so much, dont feel as worried now, they love each other to bits most of the the time and never have any scraps, so I guess it is madame being a bit bossy with poor murphey! has never broke any skin but Murphey does not like it at all. I also think this has influnced him socialising with other dogs.

if you get chance Morganna what kind of muzzle would you recommend.

Thanks Pauline...and Murphey!

hi there,

both my boys wear plastic lightweight muzzles with the majority of the muzzle box under the jaw so to speak, plastic is better than the wire racing ones because if the dog happens to fall the wire can cut into the face whereas the plastic gives more.If you wish to have a look to see what I mean and to see my boys go to: phoenixgazlyn.spaces.live.com where you will see Merlin, the bully, roughcoat black and white and Blaze, the underdog, brindle smooth wearing theirs .

Dont forget to take your two with you to get the muzzles fitted, most petstores will help with this. My boys take different sizes so dont assume that your two will take the same size.

I do hope this advice helps so that your dogs can run happily together. Another thing that I do on release is that I always release Blaze first so that he can have a quick blast before Merlin begins his run BUT blaze is faster than the heavier made Merlin so with yours I think you would have to see which way was best for the underdog.

Regards,Morganna :sorcerer:

Thanks Morganna. Will go and buy first chance I have and let you know how things go, the timeing is great as we are about to get a 3rd much smaller dog , so need to manage this one right.

loved the photos, they are fab.

once again many thanks.

My younger lurcher aged 2 does this all the time to the older lurcher who is 8

Poor Hebe gets roughed up on walks as Scrumpy grabs her by the neck all the time. Hebe doesn't seem to mind so I let them get on with it. Hebe weighs quite a bit more than Scrumpy but always ends up on the ground but gets up & goes back for more.

Obviously if your dog is worried by it then I'd say that the muzzle is worth a try. :luck:

My greyhound William does this with my whippets when he runs with them. He is only allowed to run with Rosie and Owen and my setter Zoe as these 3 know how to deal with him the 3 pups are to smal yet to run with him and Tegan and Bandit tent to be a bit of a bully with him .They don't just bite and let go they both hang on and Tegan (dominat bitch) has hurt him before now.

Owen will turn and nip William back William is a wus and can dish it out but doesn't like taking it back. Rosie on the other hand has learnt to drop to the floor when William catchs her by doing this she submits and he turns and runs away. Zoe William just ignores although she has a lot more stamina than the whippets she can keep going all day but doesn't have the speed so he sees no point in chasing her

I would definitely try running them in muzzles :luck:
