Hi ive seen a 8 month old whippet bitch for sale ,she as been spayed does this mean she will put weight on,she needs rehoming due to health reasons ,may be going to see her next week ,any advice would be appreciated as what to look for . would i be better of getting a pup for my first dog im worried i may do the wrong thing. :wacko:

aslong as you watch how much you feed them, they shouldn't put on weight drastically, if it was me i would go and meet this whippet girl and owners, and make your mind up once you have looked and seen how she is and reacts, same goes with the owners, i have rehomed older pups before and have no problem with them. i wouldn't hurt looking but don't feel you have to get her. hope this helps and good luck :thumbsup:

I always have bitches and they are always spayed and I've never had a fat one yet . So you don't have to worry about getting a fat whippet .
Go to see her and if you like her get her but don't feel you have to take her if you are not sure .

I read that to be the present owners poor health not the dog.
I'd agree with others here, go and meet her, at 8 months she's just a pup, although she has been spayed very young at least its something you wouldn't have to do, I've had a lot of spayed bitches but never a fat one :thumbsup:

Good luck when you go to see her........one word of advice, dont be pressured into taking her if you dont feel shes the right one for you...........i went to look at a whippet that needed rehoming and new he wasnt right for us ....found it very difficult to say no

None of my spayed bitches have ever got over weight, you just make sure they get plenty of exercise and don't over feed them. They do tend to get a bit food orientated, but providing you ignore the pleading eyes, they stay slim!!!!!!!!!! :cheers:

Was in the same situation a week ago. We answered an ad for a five month old blue Whippet girl, our second whippet. I decided I wanted an older dog because of not wanting to go through all the toilet training again with a puppy, but because she was blue, the colour I have always wanted I ignored the young age. The pictures of her were not very clear so I asked if she could send some more, which she did and the information the lady gave was helpful enough, anyway we decided we were going to look at her first and then go out to the car to discuss it and my Husband would go back if we didn't want her, it's a very embarressing situation which I couldn't face. Well that all went out of the window when the front door opened, my heart melted and the same must have happened to my Husband because all his plans of what was going to happen didn't. He asked a lot of questions and was happy, looked at me asked me was I happy and I handed the money over. Two very pleased customers. I have to say my Husband asks alot of questions, he is very thorough and straight to the point. He said afterwards he could tell I loved her instantly so the trip outside to the car wasn't necessary!
As regards getting a puppy, you do have all the chewing and toilet training, where as with an older dog they have settled, but 8 months is a good age, they are still young and soppy and just heading towards that sensible stage, well my first dog did that anyway.
I am in the process of toilet training AGAIN because the lady hadn't had the time to do this I'm assuming. It will be worth it in the end but you do have to be behind them 100% when they are young!

Good luck going to have a look at her. If her present owner's main concern is finding the right home for her, there should be no pressure placed on anyone. It's sort of a 2-way thing - they have to be happy with the new prospective owner, and vice versa; just like when you go to look at a puppy, really. (I bet you fall in love with her tho!).
