I have a couple of whippets already and they were never bought as pedigree dogs and neither was the one that past away a couple of years ago but I am now looking to buy another whippet pup and dont know what to look for in the pedigree or what it all means. I would also like to take him/her to shows and this is completely new for me.

Can anyone give me any information about what I should be looking for when buying a pup as both a family pet and a show dog? Obviously I have some experience of buying pups as pets so I know about seeing the home and the parents etc but they were never bought as pedigree's. What paperwork should I get accompany the dog and what questions I should be asking the breeeder to ensure I get a good one!!

Also I have seen adverts mentioning breeding lines such as cobyco, ringmore, barnesmore, shalfleet etc - what does this mean and what research can I do to validate this? Also can anyone give advice on how to start showing ie at what age, the training required for the pup etc.

Greatly appreciated

Hi Fiona

Welcome to K9. :)

My advice to you would be to go to a few shows first as a spectator. Have a look around & see which whippets appeal to you ie: looks, temperament etc.

After judging you can always approach the owners for a chat & find out whether the dog/s in question are home bred or have they bought them from another breeder. They will be able to tell you what the breeding is behind them so you can establish what lines you like or dont & you can enquire as to whether there will be any forthcoming litters.

Puppy training for the ring can start from 12 weeks or so once your pup has been vaccinated it can attend Ringcraft & you can enter it at its first show at 6 months old.

If you buy a pedigree puppy from a reputable breeder you should be given the pups registration papers which you then have to send off to the Kennel Club with a fee transferring the pup into your name & hopefully a pedigree telling you how the pup is bred.

Hope this is of some help & good luck :luck:

Hi Fiona,

where to start!

The easiest thing to do is speak to a respected whippet breeder and owner as you should get a lot of help in answering you questions.

You mentioned a few names in your post.

these are Kennel names, all the dogs they breed will have that name at the front of the dogs Kennel Club (KC) registration name. example (Cobyco Lynns Got wind) if that person has purchased a dogs then that kennel name would be at the end of its KC name, example (Lynns got wind at Cobyco).

So when looking at a pedigree as a new person to the breed you might not know what each or any of the dogs look like in the pedigree but you will be able to see a trend in a kennel name, We like to line breed in showing so you often see the same dog / dogs appear in a pedigree (Family Tree) more than once. This is where Breeders will get their breeding to look of a simlar 'type' that they feel best meets the breed standard. To the trained eye you can often tell who has bred a dog just by the looks of it, often the case with Nevedith, Cobyco, Oakbark whippets to name just three kennel Names.

Sorry if this sounds confusing noone said it would be easy!!

Getting a good Un?

Ask the breeder what they think might make show quality.

This is always a gamble even for the breeder. Buying a pup at eight weeks old you are asking the breeder to foresee the next eighteen months. You can't predict a Champion. You should be able to expect to get the answer 'this pup should make show quality,'

Papers work with the pup;

Pedigree (family tree)

KC registration; A4 certificate with the Pups Kennel Club Registered Name,

the pups Sire (dad)

the pups Dam (mum).

Hope this helps a little.
