Hello.

I am hoping that someone can advise me on getting a whippet? Me and my husband would like to own a whippet but are unsure of how to go about finding a reputable breeder in our area (Nottinghamshire) and all the initial arrangements. We would be looking to be ready to have on in July this year.

What are the important things that we need to consider .... or is this just too big a question?

We do have the time, the love and a place in our home for a lovely whippet.

Hope someone can offer some valuable information.

Many thanks, Claire

you'll get lots of info from the FAQ section here and generally just reading the posts, we got our whippet from a breeder on here, thought we'd never get one when we first started looking, but there seem to be a lot of litters coming now.

Keith's Jill is our Ella's sister and their family have such lovely temperaments, so I'm sure her puppies will be great.

You may as well also read the dog insurance threads etc and from all accounts there's not much between choosing a boy or girl as far as temperaments go, they're all gentle.

:luck: in your search.

PM Midlander Kieth he has a beautiful bitch called Jill who he is breeding soon and a better temperament is not possible

She is an angel

Some good advice, welcome!

You should also check with the kennel club for local breeders etc.

Jill is beautiful..............

If you decide to crate train your whippet, which is an extremely good idea by the way. When you go out to buy the crate, choose the size you think you will need, and then buy the next size up.

Those people that started out with one whippet and one little crate will know exactly where I am coming from  :- "

Good luck with your search

Welcome to K9. Sure a whippie will be in your home before long, then another etc

Welcome to K9! Be warned though - Whippets are addictive! :D

Good luck in your search.

Good luck in your search.

I was going to say the same thing, and also to add a life without whippets is a life wasted - once you have one, you will want another, and you will never know why you waited so long, or what you would have done without one.

Excellent advice re crates/cages - don't think as some do that it's cruel to have a dog in a cage - they use it as a den, and ours love theirs. When you have to go out and leave the pup (which you will at some stage), at least you know the house will be as you left it, and the pup will come to no harm (electric wires etc).

We had Smidge in bed with us for two weeks when we got him, and he only woke once on the 2nd night for a wee. After that he slept through, and when he did join the others, he was clean overnight. Beware of having a pup in bed with you though if you want it to sleep on its own downstairs afterwards. Smidge didn't cry when he went downstairs, but if he had a bed on his own he cried :( So he always has a bed buddy or two. We do have enough for him to pick from though :D

Good luck, and go for it I say - you won't regret it

Edited to say - I agree with others, Midlanderkeith's Jill is gorgeous, and pups will be fab - they should be about ready when you are

Hi. Welcome to K9.

You may want to consider if your whippet will be kept soley as pet, or you may want to take part in activities such as showing, racing etc, in which case you would need to choose a whippet pup from a breeder that specialises in one of these activities. Breed club secretaries are a good starting point (The kennel Club should be able to give you a name and telephone number or look up the Whippet Club on the web). Maybe go along to some shows and see what sort of whippets you like, and try and speak to some of the owners once they've come out of the ring.

Good luck with your search. :luck:

Here's the link to the whippet club. The secretary's number will be on there. They will have a lot of knowledge of reputable clubs & breeders in your area.

Best of luck in your search for a whippet :luck:
