I was taking out Eskil for his walk today, downstairs in the corridor (we live in a flat) where the entrance is were standing two boys, one with a staffy pup on the lead, I spoke a few words to the boys and was petting the puppy, when I got up Eskil lurched forward on his lead frowling and snapping as if he was going to bite the pup. I was deeply shocked, I apologized to the boys and got out the door for the walk.

I am really upset by his behavior. He has never been aggressive towards other dogs before, and now unprovoked (the pup was just calmly sitting down) goes for an attack, he didn't even growl as I was petting the pup as to show his discontent. He has been well socialized, we have gone ringcraft and shows where obviously he's on a lead surrounded by other dogs of various sizes on the lead and he has never ever done anything like it.

I could somehow understand had it been a large dog and he might have felt threatened, but for a small pup for crying out loud.

at loss :( :( :(

Sorry I was going to reply and there was an error message and it just said I had posted when I hadnt. Anyway I think you will find that this was due to him being in an a "tight corner" as so to speak and airing his dominence. I was told this many years ago by someone in rescue, that said that dogs can kick off in confined spaces, such as a hallway, so lets hope that is what is was. You dont say how old your dog is so he could also be coming up to maturity and excerting his dominence. Some dogs just dont like pups so again it may have been an issue for him. I wish you good luck though and hope that it was just a one off. Of course if he continues it in other circumstances having a word at your dog training classes will probably help you.

It did occur to me as well, about the confined space, though he's been in ''tight'' places before without attacking. he's gonna be a year old next week.

it probably wasnt as bad as you thought if you were in a corridor it would have echoed i doubt he meant anything in it like enid said he was probably a bit jealous how was he when you were out?

hes at that age also where he will try and challenge you for top dog status you need to make sure he knows his position in your house you first him second try not to worry :) im sure he will be fine :)

he can be a bit jealous, but it wasn't the first time I petted another dog, worst he's done in the past is try to squeeze in the middle.

he did sound really angry. when we went out he carried on as if nothing has happened.

Are you sure he`s not picked up some of Oscar`s bad habits Liga?

what Oscar? that little angel? :D no, I've never seen Oscar being aggressive, he's a good boy.

Eskil was probably being territorial over 'his corridor' He probably sees the corridor as being an extension of his home and territory.

The pup was a minor so he probably felt safe making his point. Is Eskil neutered yet?

If not then it is probably his dominant male hormones kicking in.

Even my neutered girls are quitte terrirorial and will go mad at any dog passing the main gates if they are out.

Best wishes

Eve

no, I am not neutering him for the time being, since I show him.

yeah, it probably was one of these things mentioned. really hope it's not going to become a habit for him. He has always been a really sweet and loving boy and he does like to have doggie mates, so fingers crossed.
