Look what has been left in our garden by it's mother. It is hopping about with her coming down to feed it every now and then and me protecting it from 4 dogs and a cat - who all know it is there!

Me, the worlds softest person when it comes to animals, who can't even watch a wildlife documentery cos things get killed. Hope it flies off soon before I have a nervous breakdown.

Awww it is cute!!

Does it not have a nest? Or is it too big now?

I don't know much about birds! Hope it flies away soon too.....

Maybe put some juicy worms high up so it has to jump and then it might fly!! :- "

Bet you'll be down the garden digging up worms before the night is here :- "

Our three nest boxes were inhabited this year, but the birds left when some crows moved in  One box has some eggs in it, so the little birds must have felt threatened. All birds disappeared for a few days, then slowly came back to the feeding stations, but none went back to the boxes :(

The crows have now taken to jumping pecking at the windows at 5 o'clock in the morning, like they do when they see their reflection in something  I tell you what, if I'd had a gun this morning - they'd have had it!

I'll probably be down the garden trying to fend off all the neighbourhood cats.

Talking of crows. We have a big green at the back of our house with lots of big trees and there are loads of jackdaws and crows. They really do make a racket, thankfully they don't peck on our windows at 5am. You must be demented with them.

I don't know if it has a nest, I think it has outgrown it now so is in that transition stage. Unfortunately it had to pick my garden. There is enough stress in my life without this, lol!

It's terrible isn't it. He/she has gone now, just disappeared so would like to think it flew away with mummy but...

Our cat once left a half dead mouse by the back door and I couldn't just leave it so ended up driving it to the vet and paid £14 to have it put to sleep because they couldn't save it.

It's a young blackbird

They really ARE a thick species  The young leave the nest at barely two WEEKS old and can hardly fly and the parents hang around and feed them for another week or so until they are fully fledged and can take care of themselves.

Blackbirds usually have four or five broods a year too. As soon as one lot of nestlings are gone the Mum's back on the nest sitting on eggs again

If you find a blackie nestling on the ground or in a vulnerable place just move it to a hedge or nearby shrub and leave it - the parents ARE nearby and will continue to feed it

As to magpies & crows - it's just the way Nature is, I'm afraid. That's why some animals - blackbirds, blue tits, frogs etc have such large broods - it covers the natural mortality that always happens. ;)
