We are very proud to announce the arrival of 3 girls & 1 boy to our Holly (BIS Kana-ka Don't Ask Directions To Shenace) by frozen semen collected from Alex (AUST/NZ BISS CH Shenace Good On Ya).

For some odd reason, success with frozen semen down under is not terribly fruitful, more often than not resulting in no puppies & if you are lucky one or 2.

A thread was started a couple of months ago regarding stats etc... so I would like to share our experience & stat's in hope that it may result in further success for future breedings.

Holly was progesterone tested at day 9 (this was a Monday, I had expressed to the vets I was quite happy to do all the prog tests needed & knew how important they were in light of other K9 info), her levels were 4.9

2nd Progesterone test on Wednesday = 6.88, vets said leave it till Friday for the next test - kiwi's are quite laid back & I was a bit nervous not doing the day inbetween, however, they were the experts

3rd Prog test on Friday - day 13, levels 15.2 (perfect implant levels 12 - 20), she was surgically implanted 3 hours from taking the blood that morning.

Alex's semen was collected Camelot Farms System.

His sperm was 85% alive pre freeze (this can be higher if dogs have had a recent mating)

Out of the 85% alive pre frozen, 82% were normal (no broken tails, heads etc..) he had 725 million sperm (that's my boy (w00t) )

Post freeze 60% alive which is considered a good quantity - vet said 60% - 70% is very good & rarely they get over 70%.

They have a 90% success rate with Camelot Farms System

The next successful is ICSB (International Canine Semen Bank)

Then Straws - 50 - 60%

Clone virtually nothing.

From the one collection from Alex, there is enough for 3 matings, they used one mating on Holly - one vile/mating = 37 pellets.

Holly is a maiden bitch, Alex has produced well with live studs. Timing is CRITICAL as it the way the semen has been collected/frozen & I am thrilled to have 4 little creatures to drool over

Hope these stats help anyone down under with their AI's - for some odd reason, whippets have been more difficult to get into whelp - I know in Australia, one vet offers money back gaurantee with the Greyhounds as they have such huge success, can't see why whippets would be any different!

Here is a piccy of our AI litter.... will need a few pedigree names now please, going with the AI theme I have one name only... Shenace As I Am :huggles:

That's awesome congratulations. I still hold strong that whippets should be no different to greys to get in whelp with frozen semen. The technology is going forward leaps and bounds. Most of the whippet people I have spoken to have either done their collections so long ago (when frozen technology was still in it's infancy) with the semen not being good quality post-thaw or they did 1 frozen beeding last decade and havn't tried again.

I won't be using my 1st frozen semen split, from the USA dog I got a collection from, (collected by ICSB) till next year so hopefully I will have the luck you did. Congrats again.

Congrats on the new litter. We have collected (& stored) semen using Camelot systems as have friends with Dobes who sent the semen to OZ and they got 14 puppies, so this system seems to get good results.

Well Done Lynda & Holly

It's been a tense few days .... been dying to tell everone , So glad mum &bubs are doing so well

Loved my pics .... can't wait to see them in the flesh ......

Congratulations!!! I'm very happy that it paid off for you! I echo what you say--you cannot skimp on progesterone testing if you are doing this sort of mating.

I'd have killed for four pups from our frozen semen breeding, but your sperm was twice as good as what my vet was working with. I think four pups is very good!

I hope you have some future stars in there.

It is an interesting topic for sure :) I agree that whippets should be as easy to AI as greyhounds, but for some freakish reason down under, they are not! We have HUGE success here in NZ with Greys, yet extremely disappoint results in whippets & it doesn't sway to old semen collection/old techniques.

Interstingly, my friends with top winning Irish Setters & English Pointers have experienced phenominal success with frozen semen down under, yet UK apparently they have the complete opposite. It is weird!

Will look forward to hearing next year your successess "Got Whippet" with your semen

Claire, thanks for the congrats :D I reckon you have done the right thing with using the Camelot system  My friends pointer who was a maiden bitch produced 8 puppies via frozen semen, Camelot Farms - one of the progeny became a NZ GR CH, Aust CH & ENGLISH SHOW CH!!!!!! Another of the progeny a NZ Ch then exported to Australia to gain his GR CH Title

I was very naieve with the info when it came to collecting/storing semen - just assumed you got a collection, froze it & used it when you wanted, easy peasy... I was very lucky I chose to go to a clinic that my friends with gundogs used, was absolute pure luck, now I have researched, I would not collect any other way than Camelot Farms System & DEFINATELY only SURGICAL IMPLANT - lots of horror stories with trans-cervical. I also have friends with top winning Dobes who have tried both, their last litter resulted in 2 pups, they went trans-cervical due to the bitch having some issue with anesthesia etc (some breed thing she was pre-disposed to) anyway, in the end the bitch had to be caesared & was fine. I wonder what the results would have been if they'd surgically implanted like they had prevously & had litters of 5???

Wow! What an interesting topic.

Firstly congratulations on the babies, they look lovely.

Secondly, I just love the name AS IF!!!

Thirdly, when you say progesterone testing, do you mean the 'normal' blood testing that can be done on any bitch to find out when the optimum time for mating is??? I don't normally blood test, I either get my Vet to do vaginal smears or go by my own dogs' behaviour but I have a maiden bitch who has missed twice (albeit to the same dog, who I know is fertile) and I want to try mating her again to one of my boys. I don't know if she missed because she and the dog were just plain 'incompatible', can't believe it was wrong days (both times), or if she is infertile (can I test for this??) or what. So I am in a bit of a quandry as to what to do to ensure I get her in whelp.

Never used AI personally, but just may do in the future, so could you elaborate on Camelot Farm Systems etc please.

Many thanks.

PS can we see a pic of Dad please?

Yes, the progesterone testing is achieved via blood tests. It pinpoints the absolute day the bitch ovulates. The number of days she is in season is irrelevant, some may peak at day 10, some may be day 17, this is an accurate way of ensuring you get the right day. Frozen semen only has a 12 hour window to catch the bitch, hence timing be critical - fresh semen from a dog by way of natural mating can cover a bitch for up 5 days.

If you have missed with the bitch & used dogs that are proven, then I would DEFINATELY invest in progesterone testing - it was $80 for the first test & $65 for the other 2 that followed, well worth the outlay to ensure the result of puppies.

Thanks Claire for the link to Camelot Farms Systems

Love the names & the blonde child also came up with Absolutely Insane (w00t) And Libby.... I think you have An Iddicton  maybe you should Ave Inother
