Good point, but at the show, other people I talked too, would have done both. Obviously, you enter under a judge, that might like your dog on the day, but if you've got 2 judges, that you fancy having a try under, you have to chose 1.

Well Dessie

The last SYWC show had Claire Rishworth and Stephen McMorrow judging. Both of whom would expect to pull a significant entry from the west midlands and possibly some of the Welsh exhibitors. However with another breed show on the same day being more local I cannot blame anyone for entering at the WCW show especially given that the judge there was Leigh Morris whom I would expect to appeal to similar exhibitors. It is primarily the Birmingham and area exhibitors who have the greater choice in shows as both are roughly equidistant from Brum and it is these exhibitors who make or break a show.

It is unfortunate that this situation has occured as it is affecting both clubs entries. I understand the 2004 shows will not be on the same day but will be the same weekend with WCW on the Saturday and SYWC on the Sunday.

I must say I do agree with the sentiments that breed club shows have a good atmosphere and do enjoy them it is just the General Open Shows that I feel the exhibitors do not 'lend' to a good day sometimes & it is a real pity to see this happen. :( We all started somewhere & hopefully we can encourage more along the way.

Do you think by the WCW going on one day & the SYWC the next the entries will be lots better, or is it still abit of a jog having 2 in one weekend? Its interesting to see what everyone thinks because it will be such a shame for either to lose out on entries as these are can be hard enough to drum up sometimes anyway. And both societies deserve to maintain a good entry don't you agree? :)

Sausages for the veterans is an excellent idea, long may it continue as my dear old Wizzie will be there soon, perhaps they might consider a sausage for his old owner too? :D

Well, I for one wouldn't enter one show on the Saturday and another on the Sunday, even Club shows, unless they were VERY local and especially not with puppies. I'm afraid I set a limit of an hour and half travelling for Open shows and that is both general and breed shows. I would have to be guaranteed to go BIS to go any further and, even then, probably not as I'm not that desperate to win!!!

Did we not all start at Open shows at some time?, without these where would we all be? we gained (hopefully) the experience, the eye for a good dog (on this score im still learning!),

it is also where we meet like minded friends and its a chance to school young pups, it does not cost the earth as exhibiting at champ shows seems to do!

If the 2 whippet shows are held in one weekend I for one could not leave the Whips at home for two consecutive days

Rubywhip ???

Hi Rubywhip, I am glad the shows are not going to clash next year, but, despite them being on following days, I will think carefully about entering both. My dogs, not just puppies, find going to a show mentally exhausting. They need the day after a show to recover! Not be taken to another show the next day just 'cos I'd like to go.

Saying that, if at the time, as their breed club shows, my dogs prefer these, I might do both but, I doubt it.

General shows are good starting grounds for all, owners, exhibitors and the dogs etc., you are quite right.

I don't support them with an entry very often though, as both myself and my dogs, do not usually enjoy them much.

I do enjoy meeting up with friends, but I find the noise levels, ring size etc., expensive coffee that tastes like dishwater not very appealing when the dogs and I could be walking on our local common enjoying ourselves.

:b . Sorry to sound like a killjoy, we go to some-just not very many!

Dessie,

Aren't you lucky, some of us would not get to any shows at all if we had an hour and a half limit, most of my "local" shows are as far as that, I reckon 2 and a half hours is about reasonable, and that is what it takes to get to the nearest breed club shows. However, it is the penalty one pays for living in a rural area with lovely dog walks, I suppose.

Living in the south does have its bonuses!! Sometimes there are shows on so close together you could go to two in a day if you were so inclined!! I certainly can't say that I live in a rural area but I do have acres and acres of grazing land within spitting distance of my house (in a cul de sac) on which to exercise my dogs, all totally safe, and thousands of acres of forestry within a 20 minute drive where they can also run free so we may be in a urban area but not lacking anything for the dogs so I am well able to limit myself to what I want to go to, show-wise, and not miss out on anything really!
