Hi!

I'm new to the forum and new to puppy owning!

After lots of researching and discussion we have just brought home a very outgoing 12 week old Lakeland Terrier called Indy (After Indiana Jones- blame the hubby for that one!).

We're getting on with the toilet training, which isn't going too badly and he seems to be settling in very well. I just wondered if anyone had any words of wisdom to share with us? He hasn't been out yet as he's not had his jabs yet (first one tomorrow), any tips for how to train him when on a walk and out and about? How do I make sure he doesn't run off etc?

Like I said, he's very outgoing and he's getting a lot of 'no's at the moment, I don't want to break his fantastic little character but I don't want him thinking he's boss! Any tips on this?

Thanks in advance!

I would start with his recall now, while he is in the house or garden, when he's coming towards you anyway, call his name in a happy voice then when he gets to you masses of praise and treats if you have some. That way he learns that coming back to you when you call is a good thing, in my opinion they sooner they learn this the better.

Hi John, thank you very much for your advice! He's responding really well to his recall, he's a clever little thing :- )

There is a book by Gwen Bailey called (I think) The Perfect Puppy. I know many people find this an extremely helpful book, with lots of hints and tips. Enjoy your puppy, he looks typically terrier!

I was about to say exactly the same - he is a little cutie!
