So, myself and hubby have been seriously considering a lovely whippet (thank you all for your advice in my 'Newbie post'!).

We've been looking on various rescue sites, preloved, epuz etc etc for a whippet(s) aged up to 1 year (maybe 2 yrs) who need a loving home. We've noticed a few 'free to good homes' or 'donation', but I have also come across a few who are looking to rehome their whippet(s) and sre asking for as much as £300-£400 per dog.

Now, i'm obviously not in a position to judge or tell people how to sell / rehome their dog(s). But I would have thought if I had to rehome due to changed circumstances and the dog(s) are as precious and their babies (as some have stated) I would just want the best for them i.e. a lovely new home and would not worry about money?

I'm happy to pay someone money for beds / crates / leads / collars etc etc if they are willing to give this away with the dog(s). And a possible donation from resuce centres etc to support them in their work.

Am I over-reacting?!?!?!?!

Some of the dogs I've seen I would seriously take and would love to have, but am not willing to pay the prices stated...... just feel it's a bit of a shame. Hoepfully someone will be able to pay that amount to rehome these beautiful whippets.

I think you'll find that although some may be looking to recoup the money they have previously outlaid on the dog, others feel that setting the price high ensures that the dog will be rehomed with someone able to afford the many costs that can come with whippet ownership. What constitutes a reasonable price is obviously a matter of debate but at Scruples we advise people never to advertise a dog as free to a good home as it can at that point become of interest to people without the means to subsequently pay vets bills that may arise, and although whippets are a healthy breed they are quite high risk for skin tears and orthopedic etc. injury. Worse still unneutered dogs with KC papers can fall into the hands of puppy farmers and other unscrupulous breeders if advertised at too low a price.

Thanks for your reply. That definitely makes sense.

It is such a shame that we have to worry about dogs going into the wrong hands.... makes me sad :( I hope I can get a lovely dog or two at a price I can afford then.
