Anal gland abscess

My 8 year old Japanese Spitz bitch has a burst anal gland abscess which was diagnosed last Saturday - she is on painkillers and antibiotics at present - I took her back to the vet this morning as instructed, and she is on the antibiotics for another week.

She has never had problems with her anal glands before. Is there anything I can do after she recovers, to prevent this problem from recurring? Thanks for any advice
