"A nine-year-old boy is in hospital after being attacked by three rottweilers who chased him into his own home.

The boy's father had to prise open the jaws of one of the dogs during the attack in Newcastle-under-Lyme, Staffordshire.

Doctors believe the boy may need plastic surgery for more than a dozen bite wounds to his face, back, arms and legs.

One of the dogs, a male, has been destroyed and a decision on the other two has yet to be made.

A Staffordshire Police spokesman said: "We've yet to speak to the boy, to establish exactly what happened. When we have, we will be in a better position to assess what, if anything, happens next - including whether or not the two other dogs should be destroyed.

"We will be submitting a report to the Crown Prosecution Service for advice on whether prosecution is appropriate."

The dogs are owned by the family of a friend who the victim was visiting and who lives in the same cul-de-sac.

The pets were meant to be secured in the kitchen but they managed to escape before attacking the boy and chasing him home.

The police spokesman said the boy was treated at the scene by paramedics before being taken to the University Hospital of North Staffordshire."

Seems to be something in the news every week recently.

thats terrible, suprised the poor boy is still alive. :(

i can see it coming now rescues full of rotties etc. poor boy hope he gets better quick.

i have the up most sympthay for this lad and his family, its a terrible thing thats happened to them. ive also got to say though that u only hear about this because its such a big powerful breed that is able to inflict horrific injuries. you would not of heard about it if it was a pack of westies or laza's that had attacked him.

i do hope that this wont turn into another case of rottie bashing, as when they are correctly trained and socialised they can make great pets and loyal members of the family. i believe that there is no such thing as a bad dog, only poor owners and an entire breed should not be punished for this.

i dont say this to try to take away from the terrible attack on this poor lad and i have no doubt that he and his family will be traumaties for many years to come by it. the owners of the dog should be held mostly to blame for it and should have to answer for it in law, the dogs are victims in this too.

its time to bring back the dog license! and i do think that if you want one of these "status" dogs they u should have to go through a registered police dog training course with it.

does anyone know what sex these dogs where,im thinking one male and two female.

The dogs were a dog and 2 bitches. According to the paper this morning one of the bitches has a litter of new born pups

i agree with everything you say onyour post, yes it is awful and traumatic for the poor boy and his family and i do understand their anger and fear but....... we cannot/must not have knee jerk reaction and condemn all rotties, my partner had a rottie for 13 yrs (b4 i knew him ) and it was in a family of 7 children and was the most loyal friendly and softest dog you could wish for it certainly wasn`t a status dog........ in fact he rescued it from a brutal owner who beat it because it was (in his stupid opinion ) too soft. Its not the dogs its the bloody people that own them thinking they look hard an clever cos they have a rottie and yet they haven`t a clue how to look after them. Its unfair to blame en entire breed when we hear of these awful stories of dogs being vicious, Should we therefore blame the entire human race when we hear of attrocities that mankind do, after all we are all the sams breed.

My heart goes out to this boy and his family but i feel that once again all rotties are going to be victimised in the aftermath

*shakes head in despair* :(

well said sassy! ive never had a rottie but my little JRT plays with 2 in the park and they are the biggest, softest lumps ive ever met.

Totally agree with the above. There's a rottie that comes to our training class who has just done his KCGC Gold and is a PAT dog, he's just gorgeous.

Unfortunately this will be another bit of ammunition for the current proposals to extend breed specific legisation to many other breeds, with rotties being high on the target list. :(

I'm very sorry for the little boy, whatever happened wasn't his fault. I hope he makes a full recovery :luck:

According to last night local paper I live in Staffordshire the boy that was bitten was playing in the street with the owners child they lived 3 doors along the road. The rotties escaped somehow from the kitchen and chased the boy into his house were they attacked him.

The police are now trying to establish how the dogs escaped as they were locked in the kitchen .The dogs owner was out at the time but immediately had the male pts the fate of the 2 bitches has yet to be decided

3 dogs whatever breed which have to be locked in the kitchen for fear of them getting out attacking someone, to me is bad news, I personally could not live day to day knowing that if by chance my dogs got out they would be likely to attack someone especially in an area where that person may be a child. :(

Most pets even as guard dogs would still be socialised enough not to actually attack someone if they weren't invading their territory, especially not a child :(

I know it makes rottweilers look bad again but I'm afraid if my son was playing out and was attacked by a pack of them who weren't fit to be out, there would be hell to pay for the owners and the dogs

Unfortunately a dog the size of a rottie will do a hell of a lot more damage then a Yorkie. And that is what journalists eat off because that automatically makes them "more dangerous".

Too many people have uncontrollable dogs and that is the problem here. Look at the police force (ok, there have been some "cruelty" issues even with them) but if they can control an "aggressive" dog like that with the correct training then it proves even more that people just don't give a crap about their dogs and how they should behave, socialize etc, etc.

I also think some of these problems go back to bad/indiscriminate breeding by backyard breeders and puppy farms. A lot of breeds have become victims of their own success, with people turning out pups taking no account of health or temperament, or bothering to make sure pups go to good, knowledgeable homes.

There really is a huge education job to do, both about responsible dog ownership and about the importance of making sure pups come from reputable breeders in the first place.
