a controversial topic is raised in the May issue of Dogs Today magazine (UK), asking whether greyhounds should be bred at all and whether it is responsible to place retired race dogs in pet homes as there have been instances of greyhounds savaging small dogs.

Oh great! just what greyhounds need :(

There have also been instances of labradors biting children, and collies taking down sheep, and jack russels mauling other dogs and and and....

So, no dogs should ever be bred or placed in homes with anyone, at all , ever

I have an ex racing greyhound Button she came to me not through any rescue but straight from her breeder/trainer.She was actually for sale as a race dog but I bought her and retired her myself and registered her with the kc so that I can now show her.

As she came from Yarmouth Tanya (Posh Totty) picked her up for me .She spent a week happily living with Tanya's IG's. I picked her up and she is fine with my dogs and my cat. She goes to ring craft which is run by people with mostly toy breeds. The first time she went I put a muzzle on her just in case but after that I never bothered .She is great with the little furry dogs.I wouldn't let her of her lead with them obviously and people cross the road when they see me walking her and William.

I do know that not all greyhounds are like her but it shows contrary to some peoples opinions they do live happily alongside small dogs Tanya's mum has a retired greyhound who lives with 2 yorkies.

There is a woman who lives near to us who had a retire greyhound years ago she is a friend of my mum and yes that one did kill a cat but the cat had gone into the greyhpunds garden and to be truthful any of my dogs will chase a cat that goes into my garden and that includes the setter would chase too. A gsd we once had would also kill a cat if it came into the garden but was fine with mine

Greyhounds do not need this sort of bad publicity they have a bad enough reputation as it is people with small dogs and kids cross the road when they see me walking my 2

You are so right.I too, have an ex racer, and she is far more laid back than my Lurcher .It,s true what you say about people with small dogs avoiding you.I would not let Lady run with small dogs,at the end of the day,she has been trained to chase. She is excellent with all dogs, including small ones,on the lead.I love her with all my heart, she is a true gentle giant, and i get irritated by the negative publicity about Greyhounds, like all dogs, you get good and bad in all breeds.

Why can't people leave alone, I have been around greyhound for about 13 year and there are great. The frist greyhound I had in my care I stay up all night getting it back to heath after I pick him up on the M4 in South wales. Were I was a dog warden. That is were I got to now greyhounds so will.

When I can home I help with greyhound chartys and there is were I got to met so traininer and they also carie what happen to the dogs. I have place greyhounds into home with cats, small dog and noone had any problem with them.

My Tiggys was great with children, small dog she was a PAT dog when she was younger and children thought she was great and she love people so much.

Fleet is the same he love people but see him and there will sometime will cross the road because he is so big, but he would not hert a fly. People will let there dog back at fleet and if fleet barks back there say he is not trained.

Can people leave greyhounds and lurcher alone there are a very sort and daft breed and all there what is a soft chain, someones bed and a warm fire. And a lot of TLC.

Sorry to have a moon.

sadly greyhounds are seen as disposable to some :( , there are some great caring trainers out there and do all they can for the dogs after racing

i think its great to see ex racers in the show ring too!!! button was a pleasure but il say nothing aout her and sas`s incident with alfies rabbit and the once strong gate :- "

ive had dogs in full training day dreaming along side friends pet rabbits , til you put the rabbit back in the home carry case

with time love and tlc , greyhounds are fantastic pets

people who write articles saying they dont make good pets are undoing all the hard work that rescues do trying to promote greys as making good pets.they make wonderful pets, they sleep most of the time, are lazy couch potatoes and are gentle sweet and lovable.i know in ireland greys, lurchers and whippys are looked on as working dogs and a lot of people dont consider they make good pets but they do.and trainers like martin who try to find homes for ex racers are working hard to prove them wrong

Quite right Kris,

I have one of Martins dogs, and he knew she would make a perfect pet.I am a realist, and i know some Greyhounds are not suitable to be re-homed.My Lady does not have a bad bone in her body, and to think that some people would not consider the ideal pet.needs there bumps feeling.I will always have an interest in Greyhound welfare, and when my Lady reaches the end of her life,i shall be on the phone to Martin to offer another Greyhound a home.

Tan why am I not surprised that a yorkie pup sleeps on top of Deeley :- " I seem to remember having to physicaly move him so that I could go to the loo .

Button says the greyhound sized hole in the fence was Sas's idea not her's she just followed through with the plan

Please see this link to GRWE - Greyhound rescue west of England

http://www.grwe.co.uk/wotsnew.htm

It gives details about how to complain about this article.

Mine are both small dog safe, as most greyhounds are as long as owners show a bit of sense and get them socialised when they retire, so that they know the difference between a dog and 'prey'

Exactly. I've had greyhounds since 1993. Yes, one of them was very, very keen, but we took sensible precautions and she never harmed another creature - oh, except for a mouse she caught and ate!

One of my current two is a PAT therapy dog and visits the most vulnerable people, who love her dearly. Some have no speech, some can't even move their hands towards her, we have to pick up their hands and do it for them. She lies down with those who can't sit or stand, and you should see the joy on the face of a deaf-blind, pretty much paraplegic young man who feels her lying next to him and feels her heart beating under his hand.

She suffers the clumsy movements, the loud, unpredictable speech/yelling/screaming (and occasionally being trodden on by the toddler sized adult who crawls around on the floor) all without a flinch and never, ever shows any inclination to grumble let alone snap.

Oh, yeah, she's a vicious bitch alright! Sheesh. *Shakes head*

(w00t) I have a lurcher and greyhound a rescue and a rehomed racer and yes we have to watch out for small furry things on leads, but i cannot wish for better dogs with people and children. I have had GSD's in the past that have disliked other dogs, but if you are a responsible dog owner you should be aware of this and also socialisation classes at your local dog training help.

I help on the local RGT stands at shows and the majority of people ask sensible questions but its like with anything,( and i have been involved in horses and ferrets for more years than i can remember) you get some people who just are not cut out to own pets let alone greyhounds

I have not read this article yet but will make a point to doing so, and will probably will reply.

The RGT have rehomed alot of greyhounds in the area i live with great success and people just love them.

Most people up to now have disagreed with the EM artical suggesting that Greyhounds are viscious.

That is up to now.

Some one has come to her defence and Published pictures showing Greys and the harm that they have done.

Look for the post from a Mr Ratty

Warning if you are prone to oossss and rrssssss dont clink on this link. (w00t)

Our JRT has always been alright with our Greys, he's just like a hot water bottle for them.

Yes,i have read it today.I think the magazine did not expect the backlash from the Greyhound article. It,s not very often i have seen so many pages devoted to one breed :p It,s the least they could do.A little bit of groveling to all of us Greyhound owners, and potential Greyhound owners.Go and adopt a Greyhound, you will never look back

I noticed there was still a few anti greyhound letters unfortunately, but I suppose they have to put those in for balance.
