My Grandmother gave it to me 40 odd years ago, and that is all I know...

Its about 4 inches long and made of Brass, with just the one pull out section...

Thank you :)

Interesting - it looks at first sight like a small spyglass, but if so it would have a lense at each end so you would probably have figured that out!

it is like a mini telescope...glass at each end...I've not worked out anything else but that!!

I'd guess that it is a mini telescope or spyglass in that case - I thought from the picture one end was glass and the other was solid. They were used for all sorts of things, but a small pocket-sized one like this could possibly have been used as a theatre or opera glass.

Impossible to know how old it is from the picture, they were popular in Victorian times but have been around for hundreds of years.

what about a kaleidoscope?? can you see anything when you look through it??

You will have to take it along to "Antique Roadshow" Clair. They will be able to tell you all about it

Clair has it got any kind of makers mark on it? I've got some old catalogues of optical instruments ... will check the usages listed against something of this size and get back to you

No marks at all Annie no, thanks for taking a look for me, just interested as can't find anything like it on the internet!

Ok technical question ... with the eyepiece fully extended are you focused on infinity? In other words if you look out across a field is the far distance in focus (as far as you can tell, I know the glass of the lens itself might be cloudy). And if you fiddle about with how far in or out the eyepiece is whats the closest object you can see in focus? How close can you get to say Bluebell lol before she's out of focus ... could be 6 ft or 6 inches I have no idea ... but knowing these things I should be able to calculate how many diopters magnification it has which would point to intended use. Simples lol

How intresting Clair :D ........hope you find exactly what it is,to me its looks like what everyone else has been saying  .....i like anything like that :teehee:
