the owner of one of Whiz's pups from last year has rung me today to ask for advice.

their pup, Sooty has been in the vets for the last two weeks with what looks like a kind of poisoning.

it started two weeks ago when his muzzle started to swell very rapidly, his lips were crusty, he was salavating

a lot and the inside of his mouth was ulcerated. he was in a lot of pain and when taken immediatly to the vets

had a temperature of over 40.

the vets initially thought poisoning but blood tests and swabs have come back negative.

the swelling has now gone down and the ulcers are under control with antibiotics. his temperature is still

up and down, and his weight has gone from 12.5kg to 8.7kgs. the vets were talking about starting him on steroids

tomorrow. he has actually stood up and wagged his tail under his own steam this morning which sound promising

but he is so up and down that his owners are frightened to bring him home in case he goes down hill again.

he is still very lethargic and although is eating ok continues to lose weight... the vets dont seem to know what it is

or what could have caused it.

so has any one dealt with or heard of any thing like this before? i am hoping to go to the vets tomorrow to see him for myself,

i can only think of local irritants, allergies or poison but thought i would ask you as i know there is lots of knowledge and advice

to be had here.

thanks.

If you see the dog and have a chance to speak to the vet, ask about IMMUNE MEDIATED DISEASES, there are lots of them. Worth a try.

i cant offer any advice but hope with all my heart that what is causing the problem is found and that he is on the mend very soon.

Sorry, I can't help and it sounds very distressing for all concerned. Have you tried a second opinion - especially from a veterinary hospital (my local one is L'Pool Uni's vet hosp, Leahurst but don't know where you are in the country).

The very best of luck with him and let us know how he gets on. :luck: :luck:

I can't help either but this sounds really bad and if it were me, I would probably be asking for a second opinion from a top vet hospital at this stage. I hope all gets better soon :luck: :luck: :luck:

As Eve and Bertha said; it sounds to me as severe immune reaction, i would be taking the dog to a top vet hospital. :luck: :luck: :luck:

There is an immune system disease called Discoid Lupus which is localised to the muzzle and head, causing crusty infected skin, it may be worth a mention to the vet

Other forms of immune disease can also present with severe ulcers

Sounds pretty awful for the poor dog and hope your vet can get to the bottom of it, immune diseases are very difficult to diagnose as they can present many symptoms that mimic other things

thanks everyone. i am going to see him tomorrow as my kids are still off school today (teacher training)

when i go his owners are going to get me a copy of his records to show my vet but to be honest their vets

is one of the best in the area.

from what they have said he is over the worst of the ulcers etc, its the weight loss that is worrying

everyone now.

i really feel for the family, they are so lovely.

The description of the little dog's condition reminded me of Sam's initial symptoms. He has an auto immune condition which responded to Prednisolone but has been replaced by Atopica.

Sam had all the tests ie blood/heart/scans etc and nothing could be found. He was given anti inflammatory/anti histamine/anti biotic = the lot but only the steriods helped initially.

He went up to the size of a Labrador though, so steroids have to be carefully monitored.

I do wish the little one well. Horrible to think of what he/she is going thru.
