We get our puppy in just over 5 weeks time and I have already brought him a crate, a puppy lead and collar and a couple of toys.

I need to get these things before we collect him:

Bed for in the crate.

Bed for in the living room.

Bed for in the car.

Car harness.

Extending lead.

Food and water bowl.

Food (once we know what he will be on).

And once he is all grown up:

Propper whippet collar and nice lead.

House collar.

Rain coat.

Winter coat.

Is there anything else that I may need? I am trying to only get essentials and not go on too much of a spending spree!!

A camera...we are soooo gonna need photo's :D

great

cant wait for pics :D

Dont forget loads of patience and a sense of homour and lots and lots of love :huggles:

Whippet proof Bin !! Secure cupboard for your shoes..they will be found in all parts of the garden..oh , you may need to buy more underwear...that often goes missing too, then returned from the garden hiding place when visitors are there (w00t)

And don't forget to build up a stock of pillows and cushions to replace those that are de-stuffed! (w00t) Numerous pens and pencils, buttons for those that have been chewed off clothing - the list is endless. You will also need a high shelf for all your ornaments and things like mobile phones! :- "

But you will get lots of love and whippy kisses in return - it's definitely worth it. Good luck with your new pup, and yes, we need to see lots of pictures.

Mine tend to wear their normal collars in the house. The only other thing I can think of is a warm fleece, unless that is what you were meaning by winter coat. Perhaps something to chew, so that it gets in the habit of chewing the correct things.

Looking forward to seeing some photos.

I will have a look in the FAQ section then!!

I don't quite like the idea of my underwear going missing though Beaubeau!

At least my house should be a bit tidier with everything out of reach!!

I am thinking of getting a house collar as I like some of the non whippet collars that you can get in the shops.

And we do have some chew toys allready. I have one of those balls that has a long tongue on it that my sister got for him. And we brought a raggy and a mini rubber tyre (guess who chose which!!) at the weekend.

I can't wait.

(Please remind me of how excited I am now, when I am tearing my hair out when he won't sleep and has just chewed a prized possesion!)

Lots of TOYS so that he can be distracted from all the things he ought not have. It may not work but is worth a try.

5 weeks! (w00t) Not long now :D plenty of pics is the main thing! Oh and make sure nothing is on the floor...I have had countless socks go missing, dvd's chomped on,shoes destroyed, contents of handbag strewn everywhere...wouldn't be without any of them though   :huggles: :huggles: they are my best mates :D :huggles:

Make sure that you get insurance , the breeder should be able to give 6 weeks free,

Also check when it was last wormed and with what ! and if it has been vet checked .

In the excitement of a new pup these things can be overlooked

Get extra sleep before you collect the babe and most of all ENJOY

Don't you just love em

Some of the `toys ` I give my pups are ,

plastic plant pots , empty milk bottles not glass ones :- " , they love the noise they make and can be thrown away when too chewed

Old socks tied with a tennis ball inside makes a good `rag` and throw toy too

I personally found a small harness good for walks rather than a puppy collar when Iz was tiny. Kongs are quite good toys as you can put food things in them....

A supply of dog poop bags in every coat, bag, jeans pocket etc etc! :- "

Good luck, please remember the piccies. :luck:

How exciting! I love the idea of a shopping list and a spending spree is what it's all about!!! I agree, lots of things to chew on (to deter the puppy away from the furniture!), and some special treats so you can start training. I can't wait to see pics when pup arrives! One thing - I personally would opt for a normal lead - we had a few nightmares with the extendables and I now think they are dangerous. Once pup learns it can run, there could be an arm-wrenching/neck pulling episode, plus lots of entanglement. Better to learn to walk nicely (and not out in front) on a normal lead and practice recall ready for off-lead runs and excitement (for what it's worth -!).

All the best :luck:

Alison

Absolutely agree re. the harness for walking and the normal lead.

Re. toys. Small cardboard boxes e.g. from breakfast bars etc. that can start out with a treat hidden inside and end up ripped to shreds (even if they eat a little bit it doesn't hurt them). Old flannels to gnaw on - good when teething and can be washed and reused, even put in the freezer for a bit so cool for sore gums (just bin and replace when they start to unravel).

Lots of old towels for lining dog beds/tug games/mopping up etc.

Our new whippet pup will be our second pup this year (Tolly the mini wire dachshund arrived mid January) and all the above have been invaluable.
