Flora has today and yesterday exhibited the ultimate in stupidity..

after licking her foot so much she has ade it sore she has now got to the point she has eroded the pad so that she squeaks every time she licks it..

i have tried bandaging the foot but it just disappears...

why is she pestering it when its already sore and obviously more sore to lick it :- "

 did your mother have to tell you not to pick your spots?

are you sure theres nothing in her foot thats causing her to constantly lick it ie: a thorn, glass ect?.

This might be off the point but I had a greyhound that was incredibly stupid. For example she would get excited at the sound of me taking her lead off the hook on the wall. She would accompany me for a walk, return home, and then get excited again at the sound of me returning the lead. She would then look at me with a look of real confusion and disappointment. She often had spells where she would stop in the middle of a room and stare into infinityalmost like a sleepwalker. She too would lick obsessively-but not at wounds. She was obsessive about her 'private parts'. You would think that she was incontinent by the wet patch of saliva she used to leave wher she had been lying. I don't think greys are well endowed with grey matter!

If Wiliam had a brain cell he would be positively dangerous  .At match night at ringcraft the other week he decided he didn't like the judge and hid behind me. Wouldn't have minded if it had been a normal night but no Wiliam has to do it on match night. Saying that he was a very BIG man and we have noticed if you see a big man in the street he will back of but has never yet done it in the ring

I would have a good look as she might have something in the pad, pine needle from christmas tree, tiny fragment of stone betwen the toes, then if you cant see anything give the foot a good soak, presuming she doesnt race spray an antiseptic spray or cream on it & cover it with an old babies sock ( ideally babies scratch mitten with the ties to keep it in place )...

And yes i must agree some greys are so stupid, i have 1 at home who has done very similar to what your saying Flora has been doing...

Hope shes ok soon.

I would check her pad again greyhounds arent the brightets of dogs but obsesive licking can be a stress or nervous condition in greyhounds. Infact mine have ll been the oposit and are unlikly to lick injurys on themselves we have had foster dogs in in all stages of cuts and injurys and never had an odsesive licker even after spyinging and castration we have had loads of foot injurys aswell with no problems I would get it looked at

the foot is spotlessly pink and under examination nothing causes her to flinch apart from the fact she has nearly eroded the big pad away to the red...

she is in season at the moment so maybe its a stress thing,

I have foudnd the applicaton of sterile hydrogel with gauze and a very noticable blue bandage has given her an air of "sympathy" which she is playing on no end..

but I have inspected the foot under a magnifying glass which bearing in mind I can get metal splinters out of my hands at work using the naked eye is overkill in my eyes :b

Its happened to one of my dogs in the past that she picked a sliver of glass that worked its way into the pad and showed no sign.

She showed the same signs allways licking and a very slight limp.

Put a poltice on her foot and within two days the bit of glass appeared.

Greyhounds aren't the brightest, and my two are notoriously thick, but they usually do things for a reason. Trying bathing her foot in warm salt water with a couple of drops of tea tree oil just to be safe. The salk water will clean up any wound and the tea tree can help prevent licking (it does with my lot anyway).
