I've been reading quite a lot about the whippet. I've actually been thinking about getting one for a while. My neighbours used to have one when I was younger and we loved playing with it.

Then today I read this ( http://www.compareaholic.co.uk/news/insura...-expensive-dog/ ) £4K per year! And here as well ( http://sify.com/news/whippets-are-world-s-...grtOgdddbe.html ) they're saying they could cost over 60k to raise.

I wasn't planning on racing it, not seriously anyway (maybe against the kids), so it's a big investment for me.

Does anyone have one and do they really cost that much?

If you honestly gave that bilge any credence and the financial side of owning a dog is so important I wouldn’t consider getting one

Owning a dog is not an "investment" it’s a lifetime commitment

my answer

no they dont cost that much

if it's a 1st pup/dog then the layout can be a bit expensive eg buying pup/leads collars ect

would love to know where they get thoses costs from

good luck with your new whippet babie

I actually hope it does put some people off owning one..that way less dodgy people would own them and other dodgy people would not breed them....I am making no sense but I understand what I'm trying to convey...I'll go now.... (w00t) :clown:

This year I became the proud owner of my first Whippet, she is now 5 1/2 months old and I have to say that I could not recommend the breed highly enough: Great natured, lots of fun, beautiful, no grooming required and they will soon find a good place down the garden for any shoes you may leave around, though I suspect that could just be a feature of my cheeky puppy. Mae is certainly not set to cost me any where near £4000 in her first year  .

I suspect this £4000, though this still sounds a bit extreme, has included whippets used for racing and other sporting pursuits where injuries such as broken legs etc can occur and result in hefty vets bills. I have leant quickly that whippets are not as delicate as they may seem and though injuries can occur, as they run at breakneck speed, for the average whippet pet costs would be nowhere near this. If they are, I am in BIG trouble! Maybe I should stop buying her all the collars and coats.

If you are thinking about getting a whippet, and have given full thought to the commitment they require, I would say go for it, it is certainly the best decision I have made in a long time, the only problem I have is that I want another one already (maybe that's why they are £4000 a year, you just keep getting more of them :teehee: )

No they aren't as expensive as those articles make out - I too would presume that expensive fractures etc have been factored into the figures somewhere but I doubt most people would pay out anywhere near that amount of money, per year, per whippet!

My dogs cost me for: initial purchase, vaccinations, food, the odd coat and collar ;) and annual boosters. They are insured but this is about £16 per month and I only insured in case we got expensive illnesses or broken limbs and we've had none of those in 7 years of whippets (plus another 30+ of dog ownership).

I wouldn't say dog ownership costs a fortune, yes it costs something, but the love, loyalty, devotion and sheer joy you get back far outweighs any financial outlay IMO. It's a bit like having children - for's and against's, but the positives far outnumber any "negatives" there may be.

Not that I have read it but with some of the comments ie over £500 for grooming, it's sounds like a load of old tosh!!! How can I can keep 6 then on my wages??
