My little whippet, Aspen, jumped the fence (again) and then crawled under the gate to un-escape. Now she is limping a bit and acting like her hip hurts. She will put weight on it and walks around...but I would like to give her some aspirin to help with the pain. Does anyone have any suggestions on how much to give my 20 lb girl? Vets are closed now, but if she's not better by morning she's going in. any advice?? Thanks.

 Welcome to K9

Sorry I haven't got any advice but I'm sure someone will have, hope your girl is well soon :luck:

No aspirin please - painkilling drugs made for humans are difficult for dogs to metabolize and can result in damage to the liver, kidneys and gastrointestinal system. Your vet will probably be happy to give you a supply of canine painkillers for when she has bad days but will want to check her over first.

If I had to choose one human painkiller to give a dog, it would be aspirin, but I couldn't recommend it as long as there are safer, kinder drugs available. If you were stranded on a desert island and your dog had a sore leg to the extent that it couldn't walk I might say yes to the aspirin. But otherwise - no way!

I agree with ILKC no asprin,I would be inclined to use Arnica, you can now get it from your local health food shop in spray form which gets to work much faster.

Hope Aspen feels better soon

Sorry just had to say I had Whippets called Willow and Aspen they both died in 2004

Welcome to K9 - and what a lovely name 'Aspen'

What a coincidence that you should both have whippets with the same two unusual names....is there a book/film with characters of those two names or something like that?
