He barks at most things.

- certain people that he has decided he wants to speak to.

- certain dogs.

- people outside the car that we stop to talk to.

etc

and he also barks when he wants something, like being tucked up in bed. But sometimes we don't know what he wants, or he has had everything but he's still barking.

And lately, and most annoying, he will bark when my mum puts him in his crate at her house. But it is more of a yappy bark.

So how do we shut him up or train him to be quiet?

Please help!!

I reckon he's just trying to tell you he wants another whippet friend to keep him company :- "

It's not that bad bex, he doesn't do it all the time just a few times a day! Hopefully he will grow out of it.

We do try to ignore him but if he knew "quiet" it might help!

So he barks, and then you go out to talk to him, he wins, he got your attention. What a clever little boy he is.

In his eye's any sort of attention from you is a reward, so it won't make any difference whether you are just asking him to be quiet, or yelling at him. He has still acheived his goal.

You need to stop rewarding him for unwanted behaviour. If he barks don't return to him until he is quiet, then you can reward him. He'll soon get the idea.

Good luck

Yes you're right! We've got to ignore him.

I'm going to go and buy some ear plugs!!!

Our Pip is a year old and barks at everything....people walking past the house , poeple at the door. The wind ,the rain... you get the picture.

He also barks to tell me what he wants, out..supper..bed time or just to let me know that I have spent to long on K9 and he wants some fussing.

I talk to him so he answers me back.

It's great :p

I am reading a book called 'The other End of the Leash' by Patricia B. McConnell, which was recommended by a dog trainer and I got from Amazon. It is wonderful and gives you a real insight on why do dogs behave as they do, and why do we react to them in the way we do, and its consequences. If you have the time read it, it is helping me a great deal with my wilful pup and it is a cracking read.
