I dont know how she must of done it  but my girl Holly has just cut her paw - must be been some glass on our walk somewhere! Its just above one of her toe pads on the side profile (where the pad starts to meet hair if that makes sense!) about half inch long if that and quite a 'sliced' cut which makes me think was glass. It was bleeding quite abit but ok now - bathed it in saline solution. Holly is abit lame on it and keeps kissing it but apart from that fine  .

Any advice? Im just abit concerned as to it getting dirt in it and infected as its on her foot and her keep opening it up when walking about. I presume it cant be stitched because of where it is?

Rifle ended up with 4 stitches in his pad after cutting it on glass so, depending on how deep it is it may be worth letting a vet take a look. Afterwards, while it was healing, I bought some cheap newborn baby socks (£1 for 4 pairs at Asda) held on with a bit of vetwrap to keep the dirt out on walks. Oh and lavender oil is good antiseptic too.

Hope it heals ok.

Pads don't always need stitching and often heal better without stitches.

Keep it clean with salt water (I usually emerce the paw into a bowl of salted water and swish it round) and add a couple of drops of lavender oil onto the wound and do this a couple of times a day until it starts to close up.

I'd stick to lead walking for a week or so, so the wound doesn't have any additionl pressure and if she will keep a sock on whilst walking then it will help to keep the dirt out.

Keep an eye on it to make sure any dirt is kept out and for any infection that may start.

Ellie was infamous for cutting her pads when she was younger. I used to take her to the vets but it just got too expensive. We just bathed her paw in salt water. She wouldn't keep any form of sock on (we tried all sorts) and so we decided to let her clean it dunring the day and bathed it after she had gone out in salt water.

Jessica sliced her pad open on Glass earlier this year, front to back on the big pad, back foot including part of the skin behind the pad and down between two toes.

It was deep enough to have split 2 ligaments but she was lucky and missed. She had stitches, which she pulled out despite wearing her muzzle (we put it on loose for the night and she shoved her head under my OH's back to trap the muzzle and pull it off :- " ). Needless to say she went back for staples :( .

Staples came out but it's still taken her 3 months to recover, she's finally stopped running on 3 legs however we still don't know whether it will prove sore when she gets off the sand tracks and onto the grass, could spell the end for her straight racing career. (She's lost 10 yards running on the sand so maybe it's ruined her racing already).

We remain optimistic and with it being at the side of the toe your whippet will hopefully be ok.

I have a Holly too & earlier in the year she cut her foot quite badly too on glass. Had it stitched by the vet & then promptly pulled all the stitches out (w00t)

If it is a small cut that is only superficial & not deep you can sometimes use new skin to seal the wound from germs BUT if its a lot deeper like my Hollys was i bought something that had been recommended to me called Cut n Heal which is used for all livestock & small animals & it healed her foot great

Good luck :luck: :luck:

Thanks for the advice guys  Ive managed to take a pic - sorry about quality - its off camera phone. bathed it several times tonight in salt water solution.

what a heart breaking photo - poor holly is feeling so sorry for herself :(

That does look nasty - I'd be tempted to get her some a/b's just incase. Our Holly had a horrid ulcerated wound on her foot for months that wouldnt heal, we'd tried all sorts of things nothing worked, out of desperation and we took her to the beach every day for a week - the sea totally dried it up and it healed :)

Owch that looks nasty, poor Holly :huggles: I would say I would probably get the vets to double check and probably give a shot of antibiotics. My lad took the top quarter off his pad completely a little while back, I was advised to put wound powder on it to help it dry and then a bag over it when he went into the garden - the bag they gave me to use which was brilliant was a bag that they fill with fluid for their drips! It is thick and heavy duty and worked well. He did have it dressed too with spongy stuff and then vetwrap to help protect it. As I say the best thing after cleaning with salt water is wound powder, creams just keep it moist which is not what you want.

Hope she gets better soon.

Aww, what a shame. The same thing happened to my girl the other week, not sure how it happened, but she was off lead and off the main path at time, got a very nasty and deep cut that looked just like that. We took her to the vet just to be sure as there were little drips of blood leaking now and then. The vet wouldn’t stitch it as he thought it was likely to open, so he gave her an injection, think it was an anti biotic, and gave her a lotion to be applied daily, seems to have healed now and shes back to herself now. She did feel very sorry for herself for a few days though.
