Hi, I just wanted to introduce this little fella who we brought home 10 days ago a little earlier than expected. He's a Blue Whippet and his name is Blu and hes currently 10 weeks old. Well.. my feet have not touched the ground since his arrival lol its been 15 years since we've had a pup in the house but he's a beaut and what a bond we have with him already. His confidence is growing everyday and with that his little personality is shining through I just know he is going to be an amazing dog. He is already sitting nicely for treats and leaves things when you say no. There is a couple of things that we are still working on though which I know will take time but if anyone has any advise I would be really grateful. So..when we brought him home there was a storm and he was very weary of going outside and just kept running back inside which is understandable so the pee pads came out and he's been using them , I managed to coax him out and he is weeing outside now but prefers to do it indoors on the pads , so my question is how do I transition from the pads to getting him to just go outside all the time? Also he sleeps until around 3 in the morning then starts to whine so we let him out for a wee then he goes back in his crate he will go off again after about 10 minutes but then wakes about 5 so we let him out again for wee but then he'll yelp and whine and carry on until I get up with him at 6.30, Ive tried leaving the radio on , the heating on low in case he's cold, he's got a soft toy and blankets to cuddle up to , I put a pillow case in his crate with my scent, he has a really comfy bed,I put a blanket over the top of the crate so there's no draught. Not sure what else to try or is it just a case of time as I appreciate its still early days.

He's gorgeous! I was actually thinking about the little fella and when you were getting him. Enjoy him when he's little they are amazing little guy's. I'm getting that puppy feeling again lol when you need a break you can send him to me !

Haha, thanks @Whippylove I may take you up on that offer the sleep deprivations kicking in lol. I know what you mean I keep thinking the time will fly all too quick I'm sure he's already grown since last week.

Once he settles in he'll sleep fine, it's just all strange for him. I ended up with mine in bed with me so I could sleep lol that's still where they sleep now had to buy a king size bed just so we all had room lol

You could try taking a used puppy pad outside but do try to transition him as soon as possible. Puppy pads have their place for dogs that can't go out, such as because of illness for example, but for puppies they give mixed messages about whether indoor toileting is allowed or not.

For waking up at 5.00, where is he sleeping? If it isn't in your room, that would be something to try. You can put a hand down to reassure him and settle him if he is next to you.

Also - just a little thing -

leaves things when you say no.

- can you find a specific word, like ”leave”? Because when you say no, it has too wide a meaning. You will find yourself saying it to stop him doing other things and puppies don't generalise that well. So he might for example be jumping up, you instinctively say no, and he doesn't know what he is supposed to leave, if you know what I mean.

Thank you @JoanneF hes downstairs at the moment he gets in his crate on his own when hes tired which is good as I think he already sees it as his little den but that is something I could try. I understand the mixed messages about the puppy pads it seemed like a good idea at the time but think ive just made it harder. thanks for the advice

I used the pads with both of mine, and I started 'weaning' them off by moving the pad closer towards the back door over the period of time...until it wasn't needed at all anymore.
I too ended up sleeping with both of my pups and they were happy and snug with me..no a single cry or whine from them. We still do sleep together, if they choose to do so. They have their own beds and other resting places too which they do use regularly, but I do love a good snuggle with warm little dogs..saves putting heating on during the night..

Younger one of mine was quite scared when storm Chiara came around and she point blankly refused to go out. Even she has been dry for sometime now..I did put a pad on front of the door for 'just in case'. You should seen the look she gave me..'on THAT!?' There was absolutely no confusion at all that she rather cross her legs than do it on that.
In fact..it start to be the case the further they both can get to from home the better..no more no.2 at the bottom of the garden if they can avoid it. So yes...they do learn these things and use their brains..some dogs are quicker and some slower and they eventually work it out what is expected.

I used puppy pads with all of my boy's I did the same putting them at my backdoor as soon as I came home. I still took them into the garden so they knew where to go. Oliver never used his pads at all he was a brilliant pup!
Just keep doing what you are doing they are quick at learning, lots of praise and treats when blu does something correct. They say whippets are hard to train but I haven't had any issues with mine.
