Tinker has been with us for about 9 months but stayed with us lots over the last 5 years.

He was a rescue dog at 5 and lived with my son and family until they went abroad to work.

He is a Yorkshire terrier and nearly11 and has been quite happy until recently. He greets you like a long lost friend, jumps up beside you on the sofa and as soon as you stroke him. gently he snacks. Yesterday it was severe enough to draw blood. He has been off his food lately, not wanting to exercise but otherwise ok.

Any suggestions?

Hello welcome to Dog Forum!! :)

Off to the vet for Tinker - any big unexplained change in behaviour always needs a vet check I think.

I had to read your post twice - I wasn't sure what him 'snacking' meant - lol - I thought he liked a biscuit or two between meals!! hehe

Take him to the vet for a check up.

If everything is ok then to stop this snapping as soon as he does it get him off the sofa and dont allow him back on for at least an hour no matter how much he tries to get on. If he keeps snapping do as i suggest each time and the problem should stop. If it doesn't stop never let him on the sofa again because your safety is more important.

it does sound like he's in some sort of pain

sorry, but that sounds like a vet trip - nobody is going to be able to diagnose that over an internet forum

He could have tooth pain??? A sore ear, a sudden change needs investigating properly. :luck:

Thank you for your replies. I agree it's a visit to the vet for Tinker. Strange today, he has eaten and been quite calm!!!

I am new to this site but will keep coming back.

Thanks again guys.

Another thing which may display these symptoms is a slipped disc. At times Brude has been unable to get his head down low enough to his bowl, so we've had to raise it for him. He has an ongoing spinal problem. An ear infection would give similar discomfort

Yes, I'm along with everybody else- it needs investigating. It could be anything from pain to blindness which causes him to change like this.

I hope you find out what it is and change things so you get the old TInker back.

is Snack a typo for 'snap'?

With others, any sudden change in behaviour is a visit to the vet. Even if they don't seem in pain there could be pain somewhere. If it's not pain, then the more sinister possibility with radical personality change is brain tumour.

Better safe than sorry for both you and the dog.

Snack in the north is the same as snap but thanks, Tinker is off to the vets Tmro

Good luck for tomorrow - let us know how things went when you get back!

Well, no magic but Tinker has calmed down these last two days but vet has provided pain relief to give him if he does start snapping again and taking a look at his teeth under anaesthetic next week. Luckily we do have permanent health cover up to £2000!!! But he's worth it.

Thanks again everybody for your support, I'll keep you posted.

Well that might be a bit more tricky, I am not too good with the technical side but if a I can load onto Facebook and e mails, this should be ok. I'll try later.
