:p Just noticed in the Countryman's Weekly that the Northern Ireland Game Fair run by the BASC is being run much earlier than usual this year. It is on Saturday 30th April & Sunday 1st May. According to the ad the lurcher showing and racing is to be run by the National Lurcher & Racing Club. I'm not sure if there is showing and racing on both days. :D

Hi i went to this show last year and they had lurcher showing and racing on both days but because saturday last year had such a poor turnout they are holding the racing and showing just on the sunday 1st may this year as far as i know, it was a brilliant show last year. R u going to it? also did you miss to the lurcher show and racing on sunday 10th april in Dunleath park Downpatrick? :)

 Didn't see the one advertised for Downpatrick on Sunday. Did you go yourself and if so do you know who and which dogs won the showing and the racing. Also do you have any idea what distance the racing is over at the Game Fair.

Showing was a white bull type lurcher, not sure who though, lol

Over 23" was B Harper's 'Tara'

Under 23" was B Harper's 'Megan'

the racing at Ballywalter was about 100/150 yrds last year it wasnt very long not sure about this year though could be different. It is a really good show & the NLRC run alot of good classes

Do you know of anymore shows coming up?

These are the list of the up and coming shows that i have seen advertised so far in Northern Ireland.

Basc Game Fair.......Ballywalter Park........Sat 30th April & Sun 1st May

National Countrysports Fair......Moira........Sat & Sun 28th & 29th May

Irish Country Lifestyle Festival.....Shanes Castle.....11th & 12th June

According to the ad for the Irish Country Lifestyle Festival, the All Ireland terrier and lurcher championships is to be held on the dates mentioned above, which is much earlier than usual. If i hear of any other dates i will post them on this site.

Yeah as far as i know the All-Ireland championships is being held at that medieval countryfair in shanes castle on the 11 & 12 june, i take it the lurcher showing & racing will be on the sunday as usual.

I think the tandragee show is at the start of july i heard it was the 2nd but not sur for definate also John Humphreys is holding his show on 24 July and he has a qualifier at it for the lurcherworld racing finals, thats all i know for now.

Do you know when the florencourt show is on?

I have no idea when the Flourence Court Fair is on. I don't think Matt Lee and Seamus are running as many shows this year as they have done in the past....but don't quote me on that. Where you down at Downpatrick last week?

Yeah was down at it, it was a good day and all, but there was alot of heavy dogs and bull lurchers. My Torri got beat by Harpers 'Megan' in the racing final, she has lost form, not sure what is wrong with her, i got her injected to stop her from coming in2 heat and she hasnt been the same since, i'll not be doing that again for sure anyway i just hope she is in better form for Ballywalter

Will you be racing ur dogs at Ballywalter?

I'm not sure if i will get down to Ballywalter or not....just depends if i can get off work for the day  but hopefully things wil work out okay as i didn't get to any shows last year. I can understand your problems with Torri as i have been told that the injection to stop them coming into season knock bitches off form. As far as i know there are two types of injection, one which is given every six months and one which is given every four weeks. I used to give Maddy the injection to stop her coming into season but when i was going to race her with the Non-peds in England I had to take her off it as i found out that it is a banned substance. I was recommended to use a tablet named oradrone but i haven't used it as i am not bothered if Maddy comes into season or not. Hope this helps

HI, sorry to butt in, and to show my ignorance but can anyone tell me what the rules are for showing and for racing? Have never been to any of the shows and am really looking forward to going along with fergal, would love to enter something if possible!!

:D Hi Siona, no apology needed thats what this forum is all about, we're all here to help and encourage one another  . At the lurcher shows there are many classes for the various types of lurcher ie, puppy class, smooth lurcher under 23", smooth lurcher over 23", rough coated lurcher under 23", collie bred lurcher etc etc....there are too many classes to list and i can't remember them all (w00t) . It is possible to enter a lurcher in a number of the classes, it all depends on the owner. During the judging of each class the dogs are paraded around the show ring by their handlers and then the judge will go over each dog individually, once each dog has been looked over they are paraded around the show ring again. Those dogs which will receive a rossette are brought into the centre of the ring and awarded their prizes. The winner of each class are then showed together at the end were the winner then receives the best in show award or champion lurcher. This is generally the format in Northern Ireland but in England it may vary. There are normally less classes in Northern Ireland due to the fact that there are usually less dogs per show than in England.

As for the racing there is normally 4 classes, puppy, whippet, under 23" and over 23". There are heats depending on the number of dogs in each class. Usually the 1st and 2nd of each heat will qualify for the final for each class. At most of the shows the dogs are muzzled for racing but i have been to some shows where this hasn't been the case.

Hope this info anwers some of your questions...please don't hesitate to ask if some of the answers aren't that clear or if you have any other questions as i am sure if i can't answer them there are others on this forum who may.

Lurcher shows are a good fun day out with the chance to meet other lurcher owners and their dogs. :p

Hi folks,

Tandragee show will be on Saturday 2nd July at the usual venue, with plenty of classes for lurchers, as well as racing (hopefully).

Brought Alfred to Downpatrick and got 2nd in the under 23" rough coated class :D :D

Was going to race him, but he seemed a bit off colour so I gave it a miss.

All the best,

dukie

Hi Dukie, I seen ur wee Alfred, he was looking well, well done at coming 2nd  my wee Cody didnt get placed but then again he is coming 9 yr old :- " , Although Torri got runner up in the racing final under 23" :D sorry i never got a chance to say hello , i hope u dont think i was being rude, lol :teehee:

I got her the six month injection, i also heard that even though they dont come into season they still go through the motions of a season, do you know if this true? and when you had Maddy on the injection did it effect her at all?

When i gave Maddy the injection it was one every four weeks and the name of the drug was laurabolin. It was administered by my local vet. I don't know how it affected her in racing because she was winning before i started using the injection and continued to win when she was on the injection but i have heard from greyhound people that the injection has one of three effects on a bitch:-

1/ No effect at all

2/ It can make them faster

3/ It can knock them of form

When i used to give her trials around the flapping track i didn't notice any difference in her times so i guess Maddy was one of those lucky ones who wasn't affected by the injection...mind you she has been of the injection for nearly two years now.

I noticed from one of your earlier posts that Billy Harper won the under 23" and over 23" at Downpatrick. Knowing Billy you can be assured that his dogs would have been very fit and trained to the lure for a few weeks prior to the show. This is very benefical to the dogs as they know whats happening and can become lure crazy giving them that extra edge over those which havn't been schooled right. I know that if i race Maddy at some stage this year i will have to get the lure out and give her some runs as there is a difference between being fit and race fit. I know it should be all a bit of fun but i like to go to a show knowing i have done my bit, then it's up to the dog.

Yeah i know what you mean, i have been giving her loads of road walking and i have been bringing her to a flap track aswell and before the injection she was flying round the track, i got her the injection 2 weeks b4 downpatrick, & i know Harpers dogs are allways in great condition and hard to beat, but she just didnt seem right, even when she is at home walking about the garden she is just slumping about were as she would normally be recking the place, lol  i just hope she knocks herself out of it soon, lol

Thanx for all the info, sounds llike great craic!!! Will be going to the ballywalter show on the 30th, can't wait!! I think fergal's going to love it, he loves meeting other lurchers and greyhounds. Can male dogs be shown if they are neutered or are they supposed to be intact like pedigree show dogs?

Siona x

Hi folks,

Just another reminder, the Moira Game Fair will be held on 28/29 May, with the terrier and lurcher show on the Saturday. For more information visit www.irishfieldsports.com there's even a photo of the judges!!

dukie

(w00t) Excuse me for my ignorance Siona. Does being neutered mean Fergal had his stones removed or is it done some other way? (w00t)

If Fergal has had his nuts removed it should be okay as some of the lurcher judges check a dogs nuts and some don't....so don't shake hands with any of the judges just in case :p .

Hi Siona,as long as he has 4 legs a tail and a nose im sure he will do fine in the show ring, lol :p oh and if your looking to show him and race him at ballywalter it might be a better idea to go on the sunday 1st of may because im not sure if the showing and racing is on the saturday this year and there does be a better turnout of lurchers on the sunday anyway, i seen a pic of fergal in one of the other threads, he is a nice looking lurcher and should do well, what breeding is he anyway?
