No, I'm not being obtuse...

... Just before I got distracted from studying beagles in-depth by the surprise of motherhood, I'd stumbled across the rather mad sport of racing beagles on a course shared with whippets

Going to see this strange spectacle was on my to do list, but 3 years down the line I've forgotten where I came across this, and where it is

Can anybody here shed any light for me? :)

The beagles race every Sunday at the Scottish thistle in Kincardine April till October

Thank you!

Are spectators welcome? Our beagle is too old for racing himself

What age is your boy? Murphy is 8 and still runs like the devil is chasing him!! Im in charge of the beagle racing section of the Scottish Thistle Whippet racing club in Kincardine so any questions I can answer. Spectators are very welcome as are 1st time racers, we start them chasing the lure themselves and see how they do then introduce them to races with other dogs, Murphy took 3 or 4 weeks to get to grips with it then went on to become the Champion racing Beagle for the last 4 years. My old bitch never ran a race in her life (far too lazy!!) and my youngster took to it first go, We normally start the season beginning of April and the beagles run at 12pm. We run 4 dogs per race and normally have a grand national at the end, the aim is to tire out our dogs, have some fun and mix with other beagle people. They seem to love it. Hope you can make it some time. I normally put info on the Scottish Beagle Club website when the season is due to start or keep an eye on the Scottish Thistle part of the pedigree whippet racing section of this forum. If I can figure out how to put photos on here later I will do.

Oh wow! Brilliant! Thank you! :D

Brude is eleven years old but very lucky to still be with us after he was paralysed with a spinal injury aged 3. He has done well. His determination was the most important factor in his recovery. It took us 18 months to teach him to walk properly again. I know his 'flaws' as I know what I'm looking for, but he's been in showrings at charity shows with showing dogs and KC judges and walked out with a rosette, so he's doing well :)

We just have to take things easy with him. If he's been on house rest and we let him off his lead on the first walk afterwards, he bolts hell for leather and hurts his back again :( I don't think we should let him race ;)

He enjoys an afternoon out watching a working pack occasionally, and I know he'll love the social side if we can come to watch the racing

Well it would be lovely to see you and Brude one sunday afternoon, racing or spectating, its very amusing to watch with all the giant ears flapping! Have been at work since lunchtime so havent had chance to put photos on yet, but there are a few videos on you tube if you want a laugh in the meantime ;)

Hee hee! I did see a couple of videos somewhere some time back - all executed with typical beagle humour iirc :D

We're planning to get up to Scotland in the new year. We're missing the place! We haven't been since H was 9 weeks old in June '10

I think we passed through kincardine when I was pregnant. I'll have to dig a map out and look

Just had another look. The slow-mo clip was particularly amusing... They're not built for efficiency on the move, are they? :D

Then there were a couple of clips with somewhat distracted competitors  typical beagles!

If I wanted Brude to stay a course the lure would have to be deer scented. I know a nose for deer is a flaw in the breed, but at least he no longer hunts the heel line!
