Hello!

I have a future pup reserved and im just thinking about things at the mo'.

I have the impression that whippets really enjoy sleeping in their owners beds- but. I dont know how my OH will feel about that!

how many peoples whippets sleep on their bed? And how many of you get ur whippey to sleep downstairs- in a crate/couch?

Also how long did it take for your whippey to settle in his new home? ie- how long did it take for him to sleep thru the nite? or to grasp peeing outside? i know this will vary, but i would like to hear what it was like for all your first few days/weeks with your pups?

Really appreciate honest answers! xx

Hi Maggymills - Welcome to K9. Good Luck with your new pup.

My 2 whippets love to sleep on my bed during the day but at night they sleep in our back room downstairs where there is a sofa bed, a dog bed and a crate. Kobi who is 5 months now used to sleep locked in the crate, and so did Oscar too who is now 1 year . Now I leave the door open and give them the choice.

They are usually curled up together each morning on the sofabed. :huggles: I do also have a gate on this room only because I also own 3 cats and dont want them all over the house chasing round after them. (w00t)

Do whats best for yourselves, you may find it easier if they sleep with you the first couple of nights, but I started off as I meant to go on.(Downstairs in the crate) Its up to you. Good Luck - hope whatever you decide you let us know and please we love pictures on K9. :luck:

all my whippets like nothing better than going for a snooze in my bed. -_-

Regards sleeping there at night....mine dont they have a kenel...but as far as yours goes...in my opinion, it would be better if the pup was fully trained in terms of not doing its business in the house at all before u show it your bed.

Then you will know for sure that it wont have an accident during the nite. Another thing is the fact that it may wake you in the middle of the nite as may want to let you know that it wants out, you know...not so good if you up early...although dogs do vary in terms of how long it will take to train...it could be weeks or even go into the months.

:))

That is exactly what i was originally planning- start off as i do mean to go on! I'll get a crate for him to sleep at nite in and when im out he can have the downstairs and my 2 cats can have upstairs! I have toilet trained an 8 wk old labrador- mums, so hopefully that experience will come in handy!

I really cant wait! He will be blue fawn brindle, Calling him 'Pablo'

I work as vet nurse and im gonna talk my boss into letting him come to work with me- it'd be great socialisation, ive heard they need a bit!

I'll get my digital camera out in time for him, be nice to have other whippetty people to chat with!

xx

Hi Maggymills and welcome to K9.

My puppy Sparky is 6 months old and has slept in his crate downstairs from the very first night he came to us at 8 weeks. We just left the room doors open and heard him when he wanted to have a wee etc. We have bought one new crate in that time, a size larger, and it is very much his den, he takes all his treasures in there, although he had a problem the day he tried to take the sweeping brush in having negotiated all the doors he couldn't understand why he couldn't get it all in the crate. The rest of the time he sleeps on the sofa but always goes happily to bed in his crate at night.

He does go upstairs but usually uses it as a scouting mission to see what he can pinch.

Good Luck with your puppy

Hi Maggiemills,

welcome to K9, We start our pups downstairs in the kitchen and gradually as they become house trained then they have the freedom of the house, we usually leave on the radio the first few nights, you could also leave it on if you go out for company.

We also always take a teddy or blanket to rub on the Mum when we collect a pup, we find this helps our new pups to settle it smells familiar and is comforting.

My oh wasnt to sure about dogs in bed (w00t) , but he's come round :- " , nothing nicer on a cold night, than toastie whippets in bed keeping you warm!!

Housetraining varies but they are not difficult generally to house train, my nearly 4 month old pup will ask to go out now, but does have the odd accident :- " .

sleeping through the night, we normally accept we have 3 to 4 nights at most of disturbed nights, our pup now, didn't have one disturbed night o:) she settled straight away but she has company, so maybe it helped her to settle in quicker.

Looking forward to seeing pics of your new arrival  let us know how you get on,

Ta- for the reply. Im friends with the breeder so i'll make sure either one of us us remembers to get the mums scent. And theres a nice spot for the crate under our kitchen table, near the radiator.

Im planning to take a week off work, then my OH is also taking a week off- just for the initial adjustment period, then i think he will come to work with me if no-ones going to be home. Im so glad that i have this time to get everything sorted, but i still cant wait! yeh :p

mine have come to bed with me since day one :- " first couple of nights i didnt go to bed untill midnight and up at 7 am and i found that they slept right through the night  although i dont have an OH (w00t) so the company is great :D when my kids are ill or just want to come in my bed i do leave my 2 downstairs and have never had a problem either way so i guiess its personal choice ,, im sure your new pup will be happy when he settles in to his routine ,,, lots of luck and many happy years :luck: :luck: :luck:

:luck: Good Luck Maggy - we all worry with our first pup and following ones come to think of it. Think the routine is very important - they get used to that - its a good grounding for them.

Hiya Maggy,

welcome to K9  , I know how excited you must be, our 1st whippet puppy is 4 months now ( sister to Sunny's pup !), we got her at 11 weeks she lived with 5 other whippets so we worried she'd be lonely and take ages to settle, being used to a crate Ella loved it as her den from the word go. We were very lucky, she cried for about 1 minute o:) 1st night and that was all. She did a tiny drop of wee in her bed ( :- " - it was only because she hadn't drank much.)

Good advice from K9 was to take her out for toilet on waking and after eating, soon she was going to the door herself, but she is either lazy or hates the cold as she will still do it in the kitchen :- "

We have a gate to keep her where we want her in the day, upto now she's sneaked upstairs only once and the second time she went up just so we could give her the 1st bath. The NCDL (dogs trust) micro chip for £9.50 if you're interested

:luck: you'll have great fun.

Hiya Maggie welcome to K9, because I have 2 litter sisters they have always slept together in a large crate and when I got Spry I put her in a small crate next to theirs so she was close but as time went on at bed time she went in theirs and they followed and it's been like that since.

They go in there when they want some piece and I only lock them in when I go out and at night because Callie and Spry are   and would be up to mischief as soon as I left the room (w00t)

If i let them sleep in my bed there would be no room for me

Good luck with your new puppy :luck: :luck: look forward to pics

our wonderful Talulla has been with us for 6 nights - she happily settles in her crate downstairs after making sure that both rabbits and all cats are rounded up!!

She has been going to bed at 11pm and then most nights has woken at 1pm and then again at 5pm - finally getting up completely at 7am. As you can imagine broken sleep is awful but she does ask to go out for a wee each time. We are very lucky as we got her from a great breeder who had them toilet trained by the time we collected her at 8 weeks.

Good luck with your new pup when you get him - make sure you get plenty of sleep before he arrives!!!

welcome to k9  i have 5 whipps and a lab, mine all sleep downstairs, willow my older whip (10 next month) use to sleep upstairs and had done all her life then when my daughter was about 6months old she started wanting to stay downstairs, we said it was because she was sick of being woke up every night  , but i dont really no she suddenly wanted to stay downstairs. :(

good luck with your puppy and dont forget the pics

Ours have always started right with us in bed at night from day one. Never ever had an accident in bed. If the pup woke up and wasn't just changing position we took it straight outside for a wee. Within a week or so they were sleeping through the night.

But start as you mean to go on - if you're happy with them having a dog bed in your bedroom then start them with a crate in the bedroom (personally if you just have the one I'd think for 'pack' reasons they'd be happier in the bedroom - even if not in the bed). If you plan on them staying downstairs you can start with them in the bedroom where you can keep an ear on them (or just outside the bedroom door) and over a period of a few weeks you can slowly move their crate to where you want it to stay permanently. I also know others who spent the first week downstairs sleeping on the sofa while pup was crated until it was secure with where it was staying.

So there's all kinds of options.

Hi welcome to k9

Mine all sleep downstairs in cratesbut having 7 and 3 of them being out of the same litter and 7 months old I would have no house left if they were all left loose together

My greyhound William sleeps on his bed in our bedroom as he just barks at 5am if I try to leave him downstairsand once he starts there is no shutting him up.But he has a problem in separation anxietyand doesn't make a sound when he is upstairsand is happy knowing we are there with him.If he wasthe only dog I had he would have to kearn to stay downstairs but he was starting to teach the pups to do it as well. If he comes to bed with us the whippets don't make a sound untill I get up.

Occasionally the whippets take it in turns coming to bed but they aren't really bothered
