Hi all so I have a Belgian mal cross Akita female called Luna. She is just over 13 months old and weighs about 23kg. She has the build and shape of the Belgian mal, can’t really see the Akita in her, only the tail that curls.

She was 25.4kg a few months ago but she had a period where she was very fussy with food and I changed it to raw wet food type thing in the hopes she would eat it. So for about a month or more she was very hit and miss with food and normally only eating her evening meal and not the morning one. Even now she can be hit and miss with the morning one. I took her to the vet for a health check and the vet said she looks healthy but could do with maybe adding a bit of weight. He said the breed is meant to be lean.

He recommended worming for 2 months straight and to try eukanuba working dog food as that’s what the security dog and police dogs have that he works with that are a similar breed

My question is does anyone else have this breed and have issues with morning meals or have any ideas?

Today was the first day on the new food and she cleared the bowl but that could be because it’s something new.

I just want her to be the best health and weight she can be.

Thanks

Could this be hormone-related - has she had a season? Did the vet suggest checking a stool sample for worms or other parasites? This is something you could check yourself by using a service such as Wormcount. And does she seem fine in herself, with normal energy levels? Is there any reluctance at all with her evening meal? Maybe she's just not one for eating in the morning, so you could try feeding her in the middle of the day and then evening, and see if that helps.

Eukanuba may not be the best food, though that can depend on variety. A great resource for checking out different dog foods and getting recommendations is All About Dog Food: The UK's Best Dog Food Reviews & Comparisons Site
