BEN
**UPDATED: SEPTEMBER 2013**
Location: Foster home in Suffolk, UK.
Key Points: Very social, great with everyone, dog savvy, housetrained, does countersurf, walks with gentle leader, fantastic companion for another dog, very trainable and biddable, good in car, shoe collector, best in active home.
Gentle Ben is a 17mth old saluki x greyhound boy who was found to be surplus to requirement so came to us to find a loving family. Ben is a fab young lurcher with a black and tan coat and a very striking face. He has lost his kennel coat and is a very sleek, beautifully shiny boy.
Ben suffered a broken front leg before coming to us after being kicked by a horse. This has been treated with an external fixation and after 10 weeks in foster care, he has now been signed off by the vet as a healthy young boy again. All Ben needs now is a gradual increase in exercise to rebuild the muscle around the injury.
~ Personality ~
Generally: Lovely, gentle, goofy, cheeky, cuddly, learning to learn, engaging, looks for direction, very social.
Ben is a young, engaging hound and is bright as a button. He alternates between active & attentive and rather sedate, the perfect combination! He is still a big pup at heart and is very happy-go-lucky with a lovely soft personality. He just wants to give love and kisses. He enjoys some play time and a goof about and his antics are such fun to watch.
At the same time this boy is eager to please all the time and is very attentive, he just needs to be given direction. He is very mannerly and friendly when greeting visitors, and gives his love in hand kisses rather than jumping up. Ben can sometimes be a little reserved with men he doesn’t know, but will rapidly get over this once he sees you as a friend. Ben has a huge heart and is a very kind, dependable dog who was born to be part of a family.
~ In the Home ~
Generally: Very good in home, housetrained, will steal food If given the chance, ok to be left, collects shoes for a hobby!.
Ben has been in his foster home for 10 weeks while his fracture healed. He is now well used to living in a home and became very settled very quickly. Ben is housetrained and ok to be left with canine company. He likes to pinch random household items such as shoes and pile them up as his own personal collection. Ben never chews these items, he’s just a bit of a hoarder! Ben will also steal any food left lying around and would benefit from being taught to ‘leave it’.
Ben really is 100% home ready now and each day spent in his foster home is a day wasted with his future forever family. His foster parents love him and his goofy antics, he has a habit of repeatedly stretching out and sliding off the sofa! Living up to his saluki half, Ben is a very chatty boy and makes a whole range of sounds. These must not be mistaken for growling as they are nothing of the sort, Ben just likes to talk and makes a range of little groans and moans and even the odd yodel!
~ Other Animals ~
Generally: Loves other dogs, playful and dog savvy, best homed with canine company.
Ben shares his foster home with 4 other greyhounds and he loves them to pieces. All he wants to do is romp around and give kisses. He is very good and sociable with other dogs and loves loves loves to play. He can at times be a bit rough for very small toy breeds simply due to his size and style of play. He is a moderately active dog but would love a job and purpose to his life.
~ Out and About ~
Generally: Walks ok with gentle leader, very social with people & dogs, keen on small furries, good traveller, needs recall work.
Ben is a young active pooch who does love to snooze on the sofa in the evenings but also does need a decent amount of daily exercise to be content. This must be built up gradually over time so the muscles in his previously injured leg can catch up, and Ben is currently on a couple of hours lead walking a day with a bit of garden playtime. He would love perhaps less lead walking and more offlead racing to truly burn him out, which can be done with time and recall work. Please note that Ben can not be let offlead near public roads or livestock, but will be suitable to be let offlead in safe areas after several weeks of recall work and bonding.
Ben adores his walks, though is currently strong on the lead. He is being walked now on a gentle leader which hugely helps the pulling, but really Ben just needs some work and training in this area that has not been done much as yet because of the requirement to rest his broken leg. Now the training can begin in earnest! Ben just needs to realise how best to walk on the lead, and everyone will be happier when he no longer needs the gentle leader. Ben loves the car and is very sociable with everyone he meets.
~ Where Can I Live? ~
As mentioned, Ben is a young, energetic young dog with an active mind and as such he would be happiest in an active home who will take him on long walks and perhaps weekend hikes or afternoons at the beach. He absolutely thrives on canine company and really does need to share his home with another dog, or three! Ben should slot easily into an existing pack, but would also be a fab playmate for a similarly active young pooch. Ben is great with kids but may knock younger children over when playing, he can live with kids older than 8 years.
Ben is one of the friendliest dogs you could ever hope to meet. A truly stunning boy who will bring a huge amount of joy to his new owners and he is guaranteed to make you smile and laugh on a daily basis. A real clown of a dog, and we hope he doesn’t have long to wait.
~ Where Am I? ~
Ben is currently in foster care in Suffolk. He can be homed anywhere in the UK provided we have a homechecker available, but please note that you may be required to travel to meet and collect him.
~ Want To Adopt Me? ~
Ben is neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, de-flea'd and wormed and a homecheck will be required as part of the adoption procedure.
If you are interested in adopting Ben, you can contact me (Tam) via email: tam@kerrygreyhounds.co.uk, or speak directly to Bronwen by phoning: 075 000 62648. Emails are usually replied to within 24 hrs.
There is an application form for adopting a Kerry Greyhound, and we will ask you to fill it in as the first step in the adoption process. To speed up this process, we recommend you do this before emailing/calling. You can find the form, as well as further information on our homing procedures, on the Adoption Page: http://s300889640.websitehome.co.uk/uk/adoption.html.
