ok i was discussing this @ the open today so thought id put it on here so people can give me there opinions/theories etc.

ok if u have a dog that isnt fast enuf (4 an open race) over 150yds on the straights, then how wud it b fast enuf on the bends which wud b almost double the distance?? im just curious as people often say oh well im going to give it a go on the bends if its not quite there on the straights. ive had a few theories on this.

also can anybody give me a dog that was no good on the straights but really good on the bends?

I know it sounds daft Carole, but one theory is that some dogs are just getting into their stride the longer the distance, don't know if this is true, but it is a fact that some horses are better over long distances. ????

ABX was proberbly one of the best bend dogs of all time and was nothing special on the straights Gillette was another who came into his own on the bends, there has been loads over the years carol, Maid your point was better at 150 yards than 160 yards on the straights but could stay all day on the bands and had a strong finnish.

Just a thought but dogs have to think more when running bends. More so than when they run straights. At our club today i watched a dog

get to the first bend last then make his move on the bend and go for the home run. That combined with staying power on the home straight.

There's no theories about it, it's quite simple horses for courses as the saying goes

Although it's the case with some dogs (the further they run the more they get beat by) it's not always the way it works. There's a few dogs at Belle Vue, one in particular over the standard trip 470m is an A6 grader with regular speed ratings in the low 40's. The same dog over 670m is open class with speed ratings of well over 100.

First whippet that comes to my mind is Acca, phenomical bend bitch and decent on the straights but it was clear to everyone that bends and the distance was her forte.

ok as u all know i dont know nowt about bends i dont even like the bends that much so heres another question, how many times wud u put a dog round b4 u wud be thinking oh this might make a good bend dog? if u get wot i mean ive prob worded that wrong like

:ermm: Actually, Carole, my white bitch is a case in point. She dosen't like 150yds, even though she only weighs 22lb, but relishes 165 and 175, so I know she'll never get a Rch because of the distance they have to run over. However, she loves the bends and took to it like a duck to water and she would still run them now, if I wasn't worried about her getting hurt. It's just like horse racing, some are good at half mile, while others have the staying power to do the bigger distances. You have to work with what you've got and try to do what's best for your dog and you will only know what that is, with time! As for your last question, I knew that my bitch would take to the bends after her first trial at the schooling track, because she hugged the bend as if she'd done it for years! :flowers:

HERES A RECENT ONE FOR YOU CAROLE, MATRONS TOUCH. NEVER REALLY SHOWED ANY REAL POTENTIAL ON THE STRAIGHTS BUT WAS UNBEATEN AS A YEARLING ON THE BENDS AND WON HER TITLE WHEN SHE NOT EVEN TWO. HAD SHE NOT BROKEN HER LEG I THINK SHE WOULD HAVE BEEN HARD TO BEAT THIS YEAR ON THE BENDS.

ALSO SOUTHERN TOUCH, ALTHOUGH QUITE GOOD ON THE STRAIGHTS SHE WAS UNBEATABLE ON THE BENDS.

one of the best bend dogs ive seen was morris.s uptown girl flying machine at bends , she was hopeless on the straights over any distance.

I am sure Albert /Greta wont mind me saying this but-- Its the Pitts was not much good on the straights as a young dog--but absolutely brilliant bend racing --but as he got older seemed when in his veteran years to get better on straights--

the best bend dog i ever say was the gripper ok on the straits untouchable on the bends still holds the track record up here
