Hi all, have cross posted this as I believe it to be a scam for thieves to steal puppies! I will be contacting Harrods tomorrow to see if this livestock manager exists & will keep you all updated...cheryl.

Dear Mrs XXXX,

My name is Katy Fahy and my role is the Livestock Buyer for Harrods Ltd, basically I buy all livestock for the Pet Shop based at our Knightsbridge store.

The reason for my approach is that I am currently looking to expand my puppy vendor base, basically bringing in a variety of different breeds for the store.

At present in our pet shop we sell puppies, kittens, rabbits, guinea pigs, rodents and fish. All of our animals have the highest quality of care, our livestock handlers are highly qualified and have a wide knowledge of different species and breeds, and we pride ourselves on that. Our animals have large cages, lots of exercise, grooming, handling and more importantly TLC. We do not open our pet shop all day, giving our animals "Rest Time " so as not to stress them.

After we have sought our litter of puppies/kittens from a potential vendor (breeder), we make arrangements to go out and meet them and do a site report, we then carry this out anually.

This is basically visiting where the animals are housed whether it be in kennels, cattery or a house - we like to make sure everything is adequate for a breeding establishment. We take note of what the animals are fed, their feeding regime, what type of bedding they sleep on and what type of litter they use. We also like to take photographs of the area in which the animals are housed as well as photographs of the litters parents.

At the time of the visit it is important that we see all necessary paper work related to the animals such as breeders licence (if relevant), pedigree papers and vaccination, worming and flea records of the parents.

Once we have negotiated a settlement figure and a delivery date it is then the vendor's responsibility to deliver the animals to Harrods' company veterinary surgeon which is Chris Hall (based in London). On arrival at the veterinary surgery either myself or a member of the livestock team will be there to meet you ready for the animals health check - however if the animals do not pass their health checks then Harrods will not accept the animal. Once the animals have passed their health examination they will be taken to the pet shop at the store

Some vendors choose to bring the animals into the pet shop themselves and settle them in, in this case we would organise parking and a security pass for yourselves in advance.

The pet shop will be closed when the new litter arrives and will remain closed untill the animals are fully settled. In some case we would even close the pet shop for the rest of the day, leaving the animals to settle over night. The animals will then remain in the pet shop for a one week quarrantine period before being sold.

We have a very long waiting list for various breeds therefore our animals never stay longer then two weeks here with us. On homing of our animals, we interview each and every customer and would even go as far as carrying out home checks. Some vendors do request that we give their details to the new owners of the puppies/kittens, so they can stay in touch or if they have any queries or need advise on the breed, again this is optional to you.

I hope that this has given you a more indepth insight as to how we operate things here, I would also highly recommend that you come in and visit us at the store as I would be more than happy to show you around the Livestock area and talk through in detail our process.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Kind regards

Katy Fahy

i would personally cal harrods and send them a copy of whats going around, just to make them aware too, however should this be genuine i would blast the store for the manner and nature they are conducting themselves and report the matter to authorities! also ring the vet they give you and see what they thinkl of their name being bandied about! i would be very concerned about the photo and location and housing ??? def open to theft

Definitely send this to Harrods. They have the resources to find this person.

But then again I have no sympathy for anybody willing to hand over their pups to pet shop, however posh.

I was shocked to learn last year that Harrods do sell pups, kittens etc in the store

as I did not think it was legal to do so anymore.

I know that Harods run this posh pet shop and at Christmas time Siamese Kittens - my other passion were retailing for £759 (price from a reputable breeder is £300 - £350 ) and I was horrified then!! Sue

Well I have spoken to somebody in the pet department of Harrods & have been assured that they are now selling puppies again ( very disturbing ) ! I am awaiting a call now from the livestock buyer, to whom i will address the many issues of this email. Posh Totty, any ideas on which authorities would be interested? any comments gratefully received as I don't believe this should still be happening, an ideal way for puppy farmers to exploit the poor dogs even more. Unfortunately i don't have any experience with this sort of thing. Thanks everyone, Cheryl. :(

as long as they have a pet shop liscence from the local authority who will of inspected them before issueing them with the liscence to sell live stock (this will state what type and how many of each can be stocked) theres nothing you can do about it.

   OMG this is horrendous!!!! I can imagine the type of breeders who are willing to hand over their litters to a shop...it does'nt matter WHO the shop is or how posh it is either, this makes me mad!!

forward the letter /email to any of the big papers and show harrods up! also contact trading standards and see what they have to saw, also could try posting a message to PETA and highlight the issue to them?

oh dear you seem to have posted the ladies phone number , would be very naughty if she got a lot of calls from a certain website??? :- " :- "

My thoughts on this ... I think Harrods ought to hear from a lot of us, politely pointing out that responsible, reputable breeders WOULD NOT sell to ANY pet shop, no matter how "high class" (ahem!) that establishment might be understood to be.

And no reputable breeder would breed for the pet shop market either.

And while I am on my soapbox, I think the letter allegedly written by a member of Harrods' staff is very badly written. Terrible grammar and use of words, etc; but I am being picky because I am annoyed by stores such as Harrods selling animals, especially companion animals such as dogs.

I do understand the comment made regarding the premises being licensed and therefore there's nothing we can do - that is true sadly.

so if as this lady says harrods send someone out to check on the premises to make sure the pups are being properly raised and looked after what went wrong with this place in wales? bloody puppy farmers wouldnt exist without places like this and many others who sell pups to the public from their nice, clean sanitised shops.pity the people buying them werent given a tour of the dumps where these poor pups were bred and spent the first few weeks of their lives.and shame on that council for licensing that puppy farm.

But did they acknowledged that the letter in question came from them?

I find it very likely it has not, as I do not believe for one moment that they would shut the pet department for half day to settle in new pups.

The letter, if it indeed came from Harrods, is total rubbish anyway, but i guess it may appeal to somebody who thinks that if people have heaps of money they will take a good care of a dog.

Here it is against the KC rules to sell dogs to pet shops, so if it is the same in UK maybe they should be notified, and members should be reminded. Also media should be contacted and it should be pointed out that registered breeders do not sell to pet shops.

Tanya tell me you don't realy back/support PETA?

Hope you realise if PETA gets their own way no animal will be able to be kept as a pet even down to goldfish in tanks and birds in cages as they want to see an end to any animal being kept in "captivity" they were also a major force behind the hunting with hounds bill.

no i do not support PETA as i think they are as cruel as they think certain practices are but im not adverse to using these sort of people to aid an issue if i felt it was in animals best interest, i am a supporter too of using animals in medicine testing ( off to get tin hat ready for fall out!) as without it my son would never be alive today

No arguments from me about trsting drugs on animals (make up ect maybe not) as you read a few weeks ago I had a descussion with a gentleman in our local town center about that very matter.

he admited to having taken prescription drugs but was stood there asking people to sign a petition to stop all animal trsting? I might of mention he was a hypocrit or words to that effect.

To me PETA should be avoided at all cost as even involving them in a case like this is just fueling their amunition against pets being sold/kept ect.

is there any further news on this

was it from harrods or a scam

regards
